Was the drunk on the bike or driving the car?

Bummer for whoever got hurt. Boy, it sure sounds like a lot of cyclists are being hit these days - almost 1 per day it seems!

The more and more people are cycling, the more people will get hit unless SB actually starts using their bike lanes as bike lanes, instead of parking lanes (Garden Street comes to mind).

It sounded like the drunk might have been the bicyclist but I'm not a hundred percent sure about it.

Lots of drunk people on bikes lately, the police need to start giving out DUIs to bike riders too!

I might add that fewer bicyclists will get hit if they obey the rules of the road. So many seem to think it is a driver's duty to watch out for them and they have no responsibility when they, too, must obey the traffic rules. I seldom see that happen!

@336010 Yes, so many do think that it is a driver's duty to watch out for bicyclists ... and pedestrians, and other drivers, and road hazards, etc., because drivers do in fact have such a duty as detailed in the law and your driver's handbook. If you seldom see bicyclists obeying traffic rules, then you may not be paying enough attention.

I never get tired of saying this: Same Roads, Same Rules, Same Rights. Think about what this means.

I have yet to see a bike stop at a stop sign or red light, unless it's the family out on a bike ride. Bicyclists like to imagine that the road is their personal workout zone, and stopping is so inconvenient, having to unbolt those shoes out of the pedals and whatnot, which has become everyone elses problem now so the bikies don't have to stop. And what good are bike lanes if the bikes don't use them and ride in the middle of the road even when there's a huge bike lane there? And how is riding on the white line going to save a bikie? Sorry but it's not going to help if a bikie wants to stay alive. Get in the bike lane if there is one and stop at signs and lights, then maybe the respect bikies screech for all the time will be more forthcoming.

162: Since you are so adamant about earning respect, how about policing all drivers and ticketing those that do california stops, text, eat while driving, drive without a seatbelt, and generally have no disregard for their responsibility. From, A bike rider who stops at stop signs and rides in the bike lane.

@194, I agree completely. If you are the one and only bikie who stops, it's a good beginning, but the thousands of your fellow bikies who need to hear it, need to hear it from you. For those drivers you mentioned, ticket all of them now. If I see a car cut YOU off I'd give them a ticket if I was allowed to. But this experiment in misdirection will not get bikies off the hook. I drive a heck of a lot for work and I'm telling you, it's rare to see a bike stop or even slow down at a light or stop sign.

It's rare because you select what to remember and what not to remember. I remember the chp officer driving in his uniform and his personal vehicle talking on his phone last week, but don't as easily remember the person who gave me the right of way. When you tell everyone bikers don't follow the rules, it doesn't make my relations with cars any better. Get it? If you simply keep it to yourself, or report it to the police, its a lot more productive than spreading the idea that there's a good chance the cyclist you see is an arrogant jerk. If it's me, I really try not to be, and would prefer if that wasn't the first thing someone thought when they encounter me.

As a "bikie" who's been cycling for over 45 years on Santa Barbara roads, I have always done my best to respect and observe the traffic laws, and the only "close calls" I've ever had, were at the hands of "drivies" who were too self-absorbed, or whose time was SO MUCH more important than everyone else's that THEY found it too inconvenient to stop and wait for those with the right of way at intersections. Once we get the scofflaw "drivies" off the roads conditions will become a whole lot safer for the rest of us.
