Such a bittersweet story about the Lone Woman. What must it have been like for her to finally be rescued, only to die shortly after. It's been said the rich, unacustomed food on the mainland was what killed her. Her island diet would have been pretty basic, possibly only fish. Interesting news about the cave and the possibility of artifacts that may tell more of the story. Looking forward to a follow-up.

I agree with Flicka. Loved the story as a kid, but the facts are a bit tragic. It'll be interesting to hear more.

Many people would agree that she wasnt 'rescued', but sentenced to die of illnesses her body didnt have resistance to. Makes for a good children's story however...

WEll, as an actual Chumash person..I can attest that the story told in schools, is not the true story, but a very "Hollywood" version.. If you see me at the "Suyxtun story circle" on Cabrilho blvd.[I`ll be the one in full regalia..lol]..I`ll tell the true tale after I tell the circle story...Then the audience can ask any other questions re: the teachings of the Old One`s....On another note:"There are forces at work on this planet that Man has no knowledge of & should not trifle with". I was told this by a Chumash Medicine man when he gave me my sweat-lodge & I repeat it as a prediction.

I heard they found a carving inside the cave depicting a fox in a canoe. maybe instead of falling into a river and rafting over....they were brought!

@795 What/when/where is the Suyxtun story circle on Cabrillo Blvd? I really want to attend! And thank you for keeping these traditions and knowledge alive on the coast.

@854...It`s across the st. from "Burton mound" aka, the long grass strip where the Potter hotel burned down "mysteriously"[so said my Uncle Walter with that funny smile he had] as it was on a burial site...All are welcome to come listen, sing w/me,dance w/ me & learn the medicine of this land & why you were chosen to be here [by the med.,not the Chumash]. It`s all due to the recent movie incorrectly portraying us & the desecration of the islands, that I am willing to devulge much of what has been secret for over 200 years...So come & be part of what`s positive about Syuxtun [SB] & omit the neg. & untrue....This Sunday.
