OP here, thanks for all the nice comments. The camera is a Canon 60D with a 70-300mm lens. As far as feeder placement, we have two feeders hanging on our decks, one in full sun and one in shade, and have never had a shortage of birds. What mix are you using?

I wish I could have a feeder, but where I live it would become a cat feeder instead! There are several hummers that go in and out of the big stalk purple flowers out in the back, so I go out once in awhile and watch them swoop and dive to chase each other off and sometimes rest in the iron work on the porch.

@551: Glad you asked. Put feeder(s) in somewhat shaded area, and high enough that cats can't leap up and grab your hummers. Keep feeder(s) remote from foot-traffic area. Once the hummers find your feeder(s), be sure and keep whatever style feeder(s) you choose clean and free from mold. (Full sunshine makes the nectar spoil faster, hence semi-shaded area placement.) Do not use red dye or store-bought nectar mix. Mix your own nectar: 1 cup boiling hot water + 1/4 cup sugar. Take pan of hot water off stove & add the sugar. Stir until sugar is fully dissolved. This "nectar" can keep for weeks in glass jar(s) in fridge. Happy hummer watching!

Wow. I said this out loud too. Thanks for sharing. If you boil your nectar home-brew, let it cool before putting in a feeder. Not only for the birds' sake, but most feeder plastic won't take the heat and will deform. I did that when trying to sterilize mine.
