I'm pretty sure if I hungry shark is cruising for food he isn't thinking "oh, that's a seal, my favorite"... he's probably thinking "sustenance" and that's about it. I think we're giving too much credit to what the shark "thought". The diet of the Great White Shark includes other sharks and marine mammals such as dolphins and various species of seals and sea lions. Who cares what he thought. Doesn't make it ok or less tragic.

And it's why the bite didn't rip apart the board. The shark took a (mistaken) bite and the fiberglass and relatively skinny and bony human body obviously (too the shark) aren't seal blubber. Shark swims away, realizing the mistake, but it's too late, as the damage is done to the poor human soul....

@370 It's not that sharks are that dumb, but this is the most common reason for Shark Attacks. (Being mistaken for a seal)
