321P: this is the most outrageous statement I have seen on this forum. Maybe you should take a broader perspective of how damaging human tampering is destroying our oceans and ecosystems; in turn putting our own species at risk. Think about Southeast Asia, South America where heavy industry of fish/shrimp/sea farming is rapidly degrading life there on multiple levels. Livelihoods, generations of fishing and farming sustenance are being taken away from millions of people. Thank you, globalization. Anyways, a condensed rant on my end..but geeesh people, open your minds.

321 - You're aware that Jaws is a fictional movie, right? And that the great white shark is a threatened species? And keeping the top of the ocean's food chain is important for maintaining nature's balance? And that hunting sharks will not make you any safer in the water? Okay, good. Just checking.

321P - If the top predator of the ocean (the Great White) doesn't "own" the ocean, then who does? If we eradicate all sharks, do you have any idea what would happen to the ecosystem of the ocean? Google it, you'll be surprised.

Agree with Richyrich. @321P it is not our "God given right " to exploit and destroy the ocean. Nature gave you a brain unfortunately you were shorted a bit... Ignorant people should be banned from our oceans not sharks who were there long before you and your concept of "God". Surfers have peacefully coexisted with ocean wildlife forever. They are very respectful of our waters and this was a tragic accident. I hope he didn't suffer just as I hope great white sharks do not suffer from ignorant public comments.

The shark saw the bottom of this surf board. There's also the assumption that surfers in wetsuits "look" like seals. Perhaps there's an opportunity here to test different color schemes. So, so sorry for the family.

321: Maybe certain sections of shoreline that are favored by surfers should be fenced? Or have guards? Don't they do that in Australia? That would make it safer but probably not be welcome to most surfers who prefer the wild and the risks. Humans or many of us love risk-taking, although shark attacks are not as likely to be deadly as bee stings. As for Jaws, based on 1916 New Jersey incidents, there are indications that it wasn't a Great White but a Bull shark. One shouldn't take a movie as truth. Very sad for this guy's family and friends.

Just because Great White sharks live in the water doesn't mean they own it. Humans have always made use of the sea to the extent they can and have a right to defend themselves against threats from other animals. If we have the ability to make part of the ocean safe for human use then we should use whatever power God and nature gave to us to do so. The Great Whites should be hunted from our shores, just like they did in "Jaws".

Sorry to hear a surfer was mistaken as a seal, but is no deterrent to keep me out of the water after surfing Nor Cal and Oregon where sharks in the lineup are routine.Hope this keeps the lineup empty during our first big south.

After two deaths in a year, it's time to stop fooling around and do something to stop the killing. I think we should put a bounty on Great Whites and offer other incentives for people to hunt them down in local waters and clear the shorelines of this menace.

As for the ocean becoming more wild because of temporary beach closures, it's unlikely the denizens of the waters know who's on the beach or even if people are on the beach.

@284 could you elaborate on your theory some please. Are you suggesting having the beach closed for a while might make it more dangerous? I myself was wondering if a section of ocean may become more "wild" when humans are gone for a time.

Do the experts say anything about how both the 2010 attack and this one occured shortly after the beach being reopened after Snowy Plover season? Just wondering if the experts think that could be a legitimate reason.

If we humans were sharks' favorite food, there would be a lot more of us missing. It's usually always a case of mistaken identy (surfer looks like seal). Unfortunately, by the time the shark takes a bite for a taste, spits it out and goes for something more tasty, the human has been severely wounded.
