Did you tell them to come pick it up?

That's not a hive. That's a swarm. Leave them alone and they'll be gone within the next 48 hours.

How high up is this swarm? Any idea how long it's been there? They may move on to a new home, but if accessible, SBBA likes to rescue and relocate as they oftentimes make their new home inside of a structure, like a wall in your home, and this ends up as a more costly rescue. If you would like us to come take a look, go on SBBA.org or call 699-6229.

Thank you Todd & SBBA! (I called SBBA re: this thread, hoping the swarm would just be left alone. But SBBA must know, so that they, by their good work, and we, by awareness, can protect the bees.)

Off topic...but any one have an idea what type of tree that is? I have been seeing them around Goleta and was going to take a picture and ask if any one knew.

Firewheel Tree, Stenocarpus sinuatus. Great tree for small spaces, non invasive root systems. That's why they're being planted as Street Trees all over SB
