I hope so. Our town is so cluttered with plastic bags that people don't know how to properly recycle. I haven't used plastic or paper at the store since 3/2010 and I've lived!

Adults should be able to buy whatever they want unless they have a documented past of littering. This penalizing everyone because of one bad seed ,seems appropriate on a high school football team, but not in the real world!......Grow Up Goleta!

One bad seed? Generally, many adults are not responsible, as shown by the long discussion on dog poop bags. Plastic bags are not necessary - I have done without them for years. Just ban them like one would ban any other pollutant.

Harken back to yester-year of 1967 when Dustin Hoffman (as Benjamin Braddock) was given the magic word and, ostensibly, the keys to the kingdom in "The Graduate":

Mr. McGuire: "I just want to say one word to you. Just one word."
Benjamin: "Yes, sir."
Mr. McGuire: "Are you listening?"
Benjamin: "Yes, I am."
Mr. McGuire: "Plastics!"

-------------------------------------------------Mr. McGuire was right - don't take away my plastic bags!!

I can only guess how the "study" from Beach Erosion Authority for Clean Oceans and Nourishment is going to turn out. Just save the $70K and ban them, because that's what's going to happen. Stop wasting money!

899P: what was the "long discussion" on dog poop bags? Do they plan to ban those also? I most surely hope not!

929P: Discussion on poop bags started out about dog walkers leaving picked up dog poop in bags, along the trails.
Too bad people are so frickin' lazy they can't bring a bread bag or produce bag and reuse that to pick up poop!

As for Goleta banning plastic grocery bags----HOORAY!
I'm with those who already know how much better it is to bring your own bags. I've been doing it since 1990, and I LOVE IT!

334929P - it was in the context of many people being unable to be responsible - i.e. a real live example.

So Roger Aceves only NO vote - why!? I watched the hearing and the best i could figure out is that Roger likes to "stand out and be different"--- even when it means abandoning science, environment and supporters!

Anna's bakery in the Camino Real Marketplace has macaroons, chocolate covered ones are 95 cents, plain are 75 cents. They are very delicious.

Ban the darn plastic bags.

They're everywhere blowing around on the sides of the road & congest the empty lots of Goleta.

Anyone use or have a problem with "Hefty"-type garbage bags? Or the ones sold at places like Costco? (And now, like cat litter, they put *odor control* into them. Just take out the darn trash and compost! And clean the cat box every day; it doesn't smell if you do that for your pet cat! I use the same bag for cat mess and keep it on the upstairs porch for a few days. These are pet peeves of mine).

I've never bought plastic pre-packaged, pre-made garbage bags in my entire life, except when a family member was in terminal illness with some home treatment (zero needles or biohazard involved). I've also never let a plastic grocery bag float free or fly out the car window, nor dumped one after a picnic or a dog poop or whatever they're used for.

That said, in principal and in practice I support the ban. But that won't stop me from getting a very large supply of trash bags while they're free! I'm just resting my reusable bags; they're on a long vacation. While they are, I'll wash them, when I get around to it.

And the worst thing about those Hefty bag commercials? They show "mom" scraping a PLATE OF FOOD into the trash... I appreciate and join in the efforts, but as I see it, the planet is doomed by our race, because the even bigger issues aren't acknowledged. We'll never stop using fossil fuels til the generation that finishes them up. Glad I don't have kids and I won't be here. Not that I want sea birds, turtles and others eating plastic bags, but ocean acidification, as just one example, is probably as big or bigger of a problem.

874, this is not about stopping anyone from "buying" plastic bags. If you want to buy plastic bags and use them to carry home your groceries you may do so. It is about giving them to folks in absurd quantities for momentary uses and then having them get loose in the environment and fill up landfills. If you have to buy the bags probably you will act with a bit more responsibility in their use. This is free market dogma. Meanwhile I will use my own bags and not complain. In fact they are much more efficient at the task.

I was in Cambria last weekend and noticed that they have banned plastic bags. It doesn't seem like it is that big of a deal and most people have adjusted. If a person forgets to bring bags to the store, the store has plastic bags for sale. It seems to be working fine, according to friends that live in the area.

On my weekly rides up the coast, I always notice the 101 is covered with remnants of plastic bags. Second is soda bottles filled with urine. Completely gross.

When at Vons last week, I was buying a small bottle of relish (the only item). The person at the register proceeded to place it in a plastic bag. I stopped her and told her I didn't need one kind of chuckling. She looked at me like I was weird for not just taking it and throwing it away.

The bags are so insignificant to most, they won't even ask if you want one, they just assume you don't want to use your opposable thumbs. The ban isn't about keeping people from having plastic at all, its about eliminating mindless waste.

Is the ban just on grocery stores? I bought one item at a CVS recently and the clerk demanded that it be in a plastic bag when I walked out. He claimed that it was store policy. Taco Bell and Mcdonald's use plastic bags as well, they will likely sue the city.

I live deep in the heart of the Goleta Ghetto - you can't walk 50 feet without finding remnants of plastic bags (and lots of other fun things too). I stopped accepting any type of plastic or paper bag from stores many years ago - my reuseable bags are so much prettier. I am as far from environmentally conscious as you can get (just being honest) but this was an easy switch. I always thought plastic bags were yucky anyhow.

Funny thing is, one of the biggest consumer stores in town doesn't use plastic bags; Costco.

I'm not generally a fan because I feel Costco leads to waste in many cases. At least they are doing something right, and I really don't think they are hurting for business.

Life is pretty easily livable without single use plastic bags.

219 - I go to CVS all the time and the only thing they require to be bagged is alcohol.

Actually 297, It depends on what alcohol you buy. For example a six pack of beer requires a bag, but a twelve pack... no bag.

Sounds good to me. Does this mean that Home Depot cannot use plastic bags? It would be sweet if they did.

So sad that we've come to this, but not surprising in the ultra-lib Goleta Ed-hat community. Folks, our lives will not be improved by a plastic bag ban. Waste of breath, and electrons. But go right ahead, fools.
