Surf Beach used to have the title of " Worlds most dangerous beach". Guess that still goes.Surfed there for over thirty years and the 2010 fatality was the last straw for me.

This was as soon as the snowy plover closure was lifted? The place went from completely empty to all the sudden having people out in the water? How very sad. Yeah, that is just about the spookiest place around to surf.

@667, if you're going to insult the OP, at least be sure that it's not a real story that has happened today. Which it is.

The Independent has a story on it

Very sad.

As a child we were never allowed to venture too far into the water because of the rip tides and currents. In all of my years living in the area I can't recall a shark attack until 2010's fatal one. Terrible news. Hope the fatality is a mistake, but if it isn't I hope they died doing what they loved.

What you hear about on the news is that we are killing sharks by the thousands all over the world, but it seems like the number of shark attacks are on the rise. Is it retaliation, or are the sharks being pushed into the near-shore waters because their prey in the open waters are being over-fished?

Humans over-fish their food supply, humans become food. Simple action - reaction.

Very sad for the family of the victim.

702, no. Just, no. That's not the cause of this shark attack, or any other shark attack in history. If that was the case, sharks would 1) have been attacking humans for prey decades ago and 2) there would't be a body left.

This is a typical attack, which clearly shows mistaken identity....if a shark wanted to eat humans, the entire body would be devoured quickly. This attack, like most shark attacks, are a bite which sadly leads to bleeding out for the human victim while the shark retreats, leaving the majority of the body intact.

It's horrifying that this man died, but please don't fuel false information like this. It's not got anything to do with over-fishing or anything like that. This is a classic case of mistaken identity, otherwise there'd be nothing left. Large sharks are common in that are during October-Feb and always have been.

715 is correct. Sharks don't seem to like the taste of humans and quit after one bite. The explanation for attacks that I've read for years is that people in wetsuits are mistaken for seals. Sharks have become more aggressive because they're hungry due to overfishing, but they haven't added humans to their diet to compensate for humans eating their preferred food.

For every action there is a reaction equal in magnitude and oposite in direction...

RIP, condolences to the family and friends...

Firstly and most importantly, condolences to the Solorio family and friends.

There's a theory of why they bite people other than mistaken identity and that's curiosity. They don't know what we are, and they don't have hands, so they check us out the only way they can, with a bite. They realize we're bony and don't taste good, so we don't get consumed, but their little taste is enough to cause massive wounds. Mistaken identity is also possible, but it's believed their eyesight is actually quite a bit better than previously thought and that they may be able to tell we're not a pinniped.
