road rash really sucks, i've had my fair share. it amazes me how many people ride scooters on the street without any safety gear at all, wearing sandals and shorts, no gloves and a t-shirt. even jeans, long sleeves and tennis shoes won't save your skin when you hit the pavement at any speed faster than you can run. i hope both parties heal quickly, here's some food for though when you're planning on riding a motorized vehicle on the street without proper safety gear: http://hellforleathermagazine.com/2012/10/why-wearing-jeans-on-a-motorcycle-is-a-really-bad-idea/

I blame the Mesa Architects that narrowed Cliff drive here, rather than more west towards La Marina.

To the folks involved in this accident both cyclist and scooter rider. Thank you for being so kind and gracious to one another. When my daughter got in a fender bender a year ago the old lady she hit was not so kind. Yelling and screaming all the cuss words she could think of. (and all were ok). By the time I got to my child she was hysterical. I find it refreshing to read that you all are taking the high road and being so understanding. You made my day. Now on to watch the debates :)

Okay, here's the word from the cyclist. First of all, I am fine. Just as the father of the scooter said, the scooter driver made the amazing decision to lay down the scooter, causing injuries to herself, instead of hitting me. I will always be incredibly grateful to her. Second of all, I did not break any laws. I wasn't even being irrational. Did you ever consider that the reason they call them accidents is because they are ACCIDENTS. There was a lot going on, and because I'm a bicyclist, I can't travel at the same speed normal vehicles do as part of the turn lane. It just was a bad situation. I am so so glad the scooter driver is okay. And the way their family handled the situation was mature and wonderful. No need for anyone here to take this situation personally and get defensive.

@324 Your kid is at fault and your calling us idoits??? You must be one of those really smart people. Maybe the parent of the kid on the scooter is at fault.

324, glad to see your child was not badly hurt....before pointing out how uncaring everybody is, how about a progress report on the cyclist your child drove into?

324 - glad to hear your child is ok!

348 - yup, that sounds about right regarding the mentality of many local cyclists. Not really sure how on earth these types of cyclists even make it to work/school or wherever they go.

To all those that think similarly: PLEASE explain how you think running a light or stop sign is ok? You do realize how much an automobile weighs, right?

"Share the Road" indeed, but please don't assume cars won't flatten you if you run a light in front of one.

From KEYT News:
Crash Near SBCC Injures Two People
Written by C.J. Ward

SANTA BARBARA - A crash between a moped and a bicycle injured two people near Santa Barbara City College.

It happened about 9:30 Monday morning on Cliff Drive at Loma Alta where Cliff narrows from two lanes down to one.

Police tell KEY News the moped driver was at fault. They say she tried to change lanes without looking first and did not see a woman on a bike in the turn lane. Officers say the woman on the bike was headed to SBCC.

Both women were taken to Cottage hospital as a precaution, however they did suffer road rash.

I had posted awhile back about bike running red lights downtown
I response to my post: a poster said " that bikes running red lights is not a priority"
And there you have it

As the parent of the person who was on the scooter . . .

I have a lot to say about the idiots who post here. Yes, the word is correct, idiots. I have yet to see nothing but assumptions from everyone but the reporting party.

I have yet to see anyone show any care or concern for the person who went down. What a pathetic showing by the people on this forum. So much for civility.

As to 218 - thanks for reporting.

We just left the hospital. The scooter rider has nothing more than a series of road rash. There were no broken bones, no concussion, nothing. I am seriously glad that the choice to lay the bike down was made. Had that decision not been made, then the bicyclist may very well be in serious or possibly fatal condition.

The scooter will be repaired, the scraps will heal. At the end of the day, the wise choice to drop it saved a serious issue. For that, I could not be prouder of my child.

310 - I don't know that they "love" to run stop signs so much as they just don't care. Worse yet, I think many cyclists rely on the false assumption that, no matter what the circumstances, if there is a collision, it is ALWAYS the car's fault.

Not only is this simply not true, it creates a dangerous sense of false security.

I will say it: Bicycle riders LOVE to ignore stop signs. I will even go further with my stereotype: It seems the serious ones with all the crazy outfits are the biggest perpetrators. They don't want to lose all that precious momentum. I almost lost my leg on Cliff drive. I am feeling very well qualified to comment on this. Careful on that street. So many side streets, students, tourists, businesses. Keep your eyes on your fries!

Seriously everyone, give it a rest on the all-bicyclists-are-the-devil front...BOTH drivers failed to signal, BOTH are at fault. End of story.

Will when medics got there they said the moped rider was down in the street was he or she faking? Motorists always use bicyclists breaking the laws as an excuse not toshare the roads with them. I'll say it again hit me with your car and it's your fault you better run!

Let's see, how many fingers can we point? We all know how often bicyclists break the laws (I read about it on Edhat all the time). And of course, there's no doubt they were City College students (we all know how reckless they can be). It's also obvious they were both homeless (they must have stolen their respective vehicles). And I guarantee they were both "illegal aliens" as well.

Who am I missing?

If we're going to get into the whole bicyclists/drivers not obeying the rules then here's one for you:

On Saturday, during the Century Ride, I was stopped at an intersection (Winchester and Cathedral Oaks) and a cyclists approached from the right (coming up Cathedral Oaks). I was about to proceed lawfully into the intersection and had to stop as the cyclist slowly cruised through without stopping and turned left onto Winchester without so much as even looking at me.

This kind of thing happens regularly at that intersection however, I guess I expected more from participants in an organized ride.

And yes, before anyone starts in, I do know that many car drivers disobey traffic laws. BUT, running a stop sign is a common cyclist offense (especially there).

218:

I could have done without your jab at bicyclists. If you like, I can keep a running tally of how many people talk on their phones when they drive and send it to you.

Why would anyone need to stop for something so minor? No injuries and apparently both scooter and bike could easily be moved out to the side of the road so they would no longer impede traffic.... why must the world stop?

I wonder if both participants in the collision were CC students who will pay a little more attention next time.

218... the problem is not signaling or not but in not riding defensively. Sad to see how many riders wear only shorts and flip flops without a thought or care to the damage they will suffer when they go down. Yes, Maisy, bikes and scooters will go down - it's a matter of when.

221: What?
218: Thanks for the info. That would terrify me if I hit a bicyclist on my scooter. I always signal, though - if you're riding a scooter/motorcycle and don't signal, you're an idiot. If you ride, you do everything in your power to make your intentions known and you ride incredibly aware of your surroundings and always ride like you're invisible (which you typically are to larger vehicles).

If they were both on their phones and didn't look very injured there is no reason for people to stop....

I was the reporting party for this accident. Neither signaled that they were going to be changing lanes and it appeared that the bicyclist cut off the scooter causing them to lock wheels. Yet another example of bikes not obeying the laws in town. It amazed me how many people just drove by after seeing something like that. It looked like the injuries could have been fairly minor since both were moving around and talking on their phones.
