Someone who is wealthy enough to afford a plane has been enjoying his/her hobby just as you enjoy walking your dogs. He/She pays mightily for theirs. You are enjoying yours for considerably less money.

Unless it's a HELICOPTER, which would probably make it some type of law enforcement aircraft, that's weird. How low are you talking? A VFR(flying visually) pilot would be stupid to be below 500-1000' over the water at night, especially in a single engine. If it's an IFR pilot(flying by instruments) or they are practicing instrument approaches, they shouldn't be below about 900' in that area, as that is the minimum altitude allowed for the westbound approach to the airport.

Wow. This is the last time i pay for an edhat subscription...the venom and hostility (by nonpaying commenter 056) in response to a simple comment/question i posted is really ugly. I made an observation of something that was very unusual in a neighborhood in which ive lived for over twenty years. What mean people.

083: I don't think 056 was being mean, just trying to convey information that didn't come across very friendly. I'm a pilot and I've met some inconsiderate pilots but, for the most part, the pilots I know are considerate. I don't know which type you saw, but the regulations say that a pilot must stay, over uncongested areas, at least 500' feet from people, vessels or structures. That means that they can legally fly 500' over the Wilcox property or 500' laterally offshore and only 1' high... legal but really stupid. The regulations also say that, if your engine fails, you have to be able to perform an emergency landing "without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface." There are practice areas offshore, east of the harbor and west of El Cap but the Wilcox property isn't in those areas. I hate it when pilots do stupid or inconsiderate maneuvers. It would be great if someone could get the tail number which is required on planes. Get that number and I'll help you file a complaint.

Agreed that 056 was supplying good info. It is necessary to have the plane's ID, which is on tail. You could call the airport's noise line on Monday and ask if any other complaints were filed.

I wonder what it was about, because the Wilcox is at the edge of the airport's control area that goes from the surface up to 4,000 feet. I wonder how low the plane actually was, and what time "this afternoon." Very unusual location for flying back and forth for two hours. Maybe someone from Hope Ranch getting photos of their McMansion? Highly unlikely this pilot wasn't in contact with the air traffic controllers, which means if you just call with the exact time and location in "the area" they could probably tell you who it was.

Not far from there and it flew over the house a few times and I was curious and never thought of it as a nuisance, but living in a urban environment I don't have expectations of constant peace and serenity.

Hey, guys. I think 071P meant 055 (der!) and not 056, who wasn't the one being a horse's other end. (Back me up on this, 071P.) That said, this is a great reason to always carry binoculars while on the Wilcox. Not just for birdwatching and sighting whales. Even in low light, if that plane was that low, if would've been good to catch the numbers on it and report it. Or perhaps put the Air Traffic Control hotline phone # on your cellphone, for future use. I agree that low-flying planes are a complete nuisance, BTW. @ 055-----Put a sock in it. And MESARATS: Please put that "We live in an Urban Environment" baloney to rest. The Mesa isn't "Urban" and if it was-----all the more reason to be respectful of neighbors and radiate peace & serenity.

083.... your question wasn't that simple. Your original post was rather misleading for its paucity of information leaving a lot of conjecture and prejudice to fill in the gaps. Yes, I read your post as snarky whining about someone else enjoying their Sunday in their flying machine in a manner that did not meet your approval. And typically such posts will generate a heightened emotional (read snarky or mean) response for you or against you. Take 099's reply..... at first a peace maker but in the end just as snarky and accusatory as those s/he is trying to make peace for. Edhat is a marvelous lab for those studying human behaviour.

Living on alta mesa, we are used to planes violating the 900' minimum height. Furthermore, the airport noise hotline is USELESS. After numerous calls I was told to file a complaint with the FAA. Why do we pay for the noise hotline if they do nothing? I am sorry that people are prevented from enjoying the quiet of nature by people who cannot recreate without a loud fossil burner.

I heard it also from my back yard on the Mesa closer to Shoreline Park. Back and forth many, many times. I am used to planes flying overhead on their way to and from the airport, but this really caught my attention. At least the person walking the dogs wasn't bothering any one else with loud pollution.

Check out liveact.net put in airport identifier KSBA. There are archives and perhaps you can figure it out. The times are in Zulu times so you'll have to add 7 hours. For example it is now 8:08 Pacific which would make it 15:08 Zulu. And yes if it bothers you that much contact the FAA.

if the plane was overhead of the walker, it would be hard to see tail numbers, even with binos. But it does sound like it was annoying. I live about 1/2 mile from 101 and near the circuit for the CHP plane which on holiday weekends works a 1-2 mile oval circuit all day long, with a break at noon for lunch. I live right under the turn point. I don't think that area as being rural. Rather undeveloped, given the population and development within a few miles. Still, a person should have expectations of being able to hear natural sounds rather than droning of engines. Sorry for your disappointing afternoon, OP. There will be others far more enjoyable.

Wait until the drones start filling our skies! Then we can speculate about who they're looking for, what happened, whose a criminal and really get into it! Did you wave? Did your dog wave? I think they must have been photographing you and your dog. Look on youtube maybe it's up by now. And remember, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean nobodies watching you.
