Roger, why did you have to say that? "If the victim is a Liberal that seems like a plus for someone from the right"? Come on. That's a horrible thing to say.

There is not enough info here to reach a conclusion that everyone "driving around her" was ignoring her. It may well be that there were people with her already and that someone was directing traffic around her so she would not be run over. I passed a bad accident last year and would have stopped BUT there were already several people who had stopped and were attempting to help. I would have just been in the way, nor do I have any medical knowledge that would have helped. If no one else had stopped, I would have done so. How many hundreds of drivers do you think should stop, park on the side of the road, and get out? At what point do all those people and cars become a hindrance to arriving rescue workers?

I have issues with the homeless in SB Roger, there are a LOT of obnoxious young people downtown who hassle for money and food. It's the ones that are mentally ill that I feel for, that I want to see the city help. There was a man walking up State St on crutches a few days ago who had prosthesis on both legs. He was having a really hard time, it made me sad, plus he smelled badly like he was homeless. He may not be homeless and it may be that hygiene is hard for him with his disability but if he is homeless that is SO wrong. Although I have issues with the homeless in SB I would never drive around ANYONE that was lying or laying (for people to nitpick or argue the wording is beyond lame) in the road, regardless of their age, color or if I thought they were homeless. I think that the vast majority of people would stop and that the dispatcher didn't have or relay the full story. It would be great for someone who actually saw this situation to comment.

I think people are letting other people die in the streets especally the homeless, the poor, If the victim is a liberal that seems like a plus for someone from the right. Local people here in Santa Barbara don't even question suspicous deaths of homeless people not even when a woman is burned to death no one questions it..Ken Williams did. I think it's one of the reasons he doesn't work for the county anymore. People said he was part of Homeless Inc. No he really cared about getting people off the street. Everyone else just drives around them.

854 I agree with you I live in the area... there is no lack of scary frightening drunk and drugged out people. But I would still stop and block off street with car!!! Im mean really! Things are super derelict on this side of town! Thus the Milpas street association. Good Job!

Sorry, 831P, but although grammar is the least consequential aspect of this story, the lameness falls your way, participle-wise. 829P is correct - unless, of course, the lady was a hen.

There has got to be more to this story than what Roger heard. Just maybe there was someone directing cars around her so as not to create a traffic jam while the ambulance was on its way. SB people would never just ignore an elderly woman in trouble, we are not that kind of town. When and if we know the whole story we can make a judgement.

lay is the past tense of lie. If she were presently lying in the street, that would be correct (and socially atrocious if cars were driving around her). However, if she was (as in the past) it would by laying. lie/lay/had lain (as in prone) . lay/laid/had laid (as in to set down). Not leivity- lame.

No, no folks it just says she was "laying in the street" not lying in the street. She could have been laying an egg or laying bricks. (just a little leivty for today).

Anyone, ANYONE who sees something like this needs to stop. Pull over the car, get out and protect the person from further injury. Make sure the person is in a position to be able to breathe and assure them that help is on the way. Anyone has the ability to do that and if they don't, they don't deserve to be called a human being.

Do we ever find out how these people are? And don't say to watch the news. I have found them to be lacking quite a bit in what stories they actually choose to cover. Though I do have to tip my hat to them for the continuous coverage they did on the recent fire.

726 how can it be Romneys America when he hasn't been elected to anything, however it is safe to call Santa Barbara County Obama Country after all we were one of the only areas to go for him in the CA Primary in 2008 when Hilary won the state, and we have been strong supporters since then. I only point that out to show the ridiculousness of your remark, don't think this had anything to do with who people vote for.

How awful that people would be this way! I would stop. I don't know how emotionally stable I would be in an emergency, but I would be sensible enough to put my car in between the lady and other cars. Leave my trunk open and hazards flashing so cars approaching can see my vehicle stopped and call 911. I really hope she got the medical attention she needed, and will be okay. Please let us know if you hear anything else.

Insane, scary people out there. A view through a pinhole at what we'll be dealing with in a major emergency. I know someone who was a passenger on a highway in Brazil several years ago and passed a horrendous car accident with bodies in the road and every vehicle drove over them - he felt the bumps. I'd like to believe it was an isolated incident, but he got the impression it was more or less SOP.

I waited awhile hoping that I would hear something else. At first Engine 2 could not find the victim, then they did. I heard the medics still responding acouple moments later. They would have been canceled the police responded too. I don't understand not blocking or at the very least physically walking out in the street to stay with the victim until police arrive. I'd even do that for someone I hate it just aien't right to leave someone all alone in the middle of the road like that...

@725, driving around a person who is down in the street is not the right thing, though it's preferable to driving over her, I suppose. Instead of moving on, call 911 and use vehicles to protect the victim until responders arrive. Properly administered, hands-only CPR at 100 compressions/minute saves lives if initiated quickly, even by untrained persons. Delay reduces the victim's chances. Let's hope this story isn't what it seems.

725: Check out the CERT program, Citizen's Emergency Response Team, first responders in natural disasters. We really don't have a nanny, we just pay for one. This is a different situation, I think I'd probably try to block the street with my car with emergency flashers on until "the authorities" arrived for this one, but "the authorities" have been very clear in stating that we'll likely be first responders in widespread emergency situations resulting from natural disasters.
