Here we go again. why do you hate firefighters so much? These haters ought to just put a sign in front of their houses saying "No Thanks, I'll Save Myself and My Family From the Inferno"

What about our military? Do you think they get paid too much as well? I mean, there's literally hundreds of thousands of troops not fighting a war this very second so maybe they shouldn't get paid as much? Is this your logic?

I spent 6 hours yesterday with Verizon iPhone5 support trying to get the camera feature to work so I download before and after photos I took of the "look out" fire.... Did anyone else have that problem??? So frustrating.

I have problems with the maps program on the iPhone5. It continues to show Painted Cave at various parts of the county depending on what time of day it is. The last time I checked today, Painted Cave is at Hendry's Beach. I called tech support and they just said "this program is a work in progress". Wow.

212 is a TROLL. Stop feeding them. Seriously people. It sucks that they are here, but try ignoring them. (I'm inclined to believe 232 & 235 are trolls as well, posting on a fire thread about their iphone problems. If they aren't trolls, well, then... Well, I know it's not happy hour, but I'm going to hold my tongue anyway.) Start ignoring people when they get off topic, and maybe we can try to bring edhat back to it's former glory. :)

I want to congratulate all of the hard working people out there who go to work each day and pay taxes so that these fireman can do what they do (and retire at 40 with full pensions).

I want to congratulate all of the hard working firemen who put their lives on the line in dangerous conditions to protect our lives and homes. I would far rather pay taxes to cover firefighters than taxes that are given as subsidies to oil companies who are making so much money that their pensions are probably 100x those of firefighters.

It is called perspective. It is not called petty whining.

212 and 258-you both are in luck! It looks like the fire department will hiring soon! You should apply. With your superior intelligence, you should have no trouble being hired. Then you too can enjoy the great pay and benefits that firefighters enjoy. But please, once you get the jobs, no wanking about the hard working conditions or how hot it is.

Keep us posted on your progress. Thanks!

From what I hear the supply of people wanting to be fire fighters is far greater than the demand. They get paid too much given what they do. We should outsource actual fire fighting to private companies - so that we can have more medical emergency support services. Question: why do insurance companies send out their own privately run fire fighting crews to protect their insured assets? Answer: they do not trust gov't run fire fighters who make more money when there are more fires and are not held responsible when they mess up (i.e. Jesusita fire).

COMMENT 333221 helpful negative off topic

2012-10-19 03:06 PM

Ok 332 - so, who pays for these "private firefighters" when there is a fire to be put out or lives to be saved? Those being saved? I'm interested in your theory here.

Let's say lightning strikes, ignites a brush fire and the fire engulfs 100 homes. Do the homeowners pay for the firefighters? Can they sue the firefighters if they feel they didn't adequately protect the homes?

Please enlighted us.

332: The answer to your question is that insurance companies hire private firefighting companies because more resources are needed to fight the fire than are available. Remember insurance companies exist for one purpose and one purpose only. They exist to make a profit. And preventing loss increases profit. Insurance companies don’t make business decisions based on trust or a lack of trust. Fighting any wildfire involves limited firefighting resources. Insurance companies have found that by increasing firefighting assets by hiring private firefighters they can use those extra assets to specifically protect property that they insure and increase their profits.

Of course, bigger and badder fires mean more money and bigger profits for the private firefighting companies. Now that's just the motive that I want to trust with the safety of my community.

This fire response was mind-boggling in speed and power. I know that the fact there were no other fires in S. CA had a lot to do with it, as did SB's previous experiences. (I'm sure I'm not the only one who sighed with relief and happiness when they said EIGHT bombers were on order.)
Thank you & kudos to ALL involved, from first responders (firefighters, commanders, pilots, etc.) to dispatchers, Red Cross, animal groups, etc., and any and all grunts in all agencies involved, like the phoscheck & airport workers). What a relief, it's unspeakable, in a good way.

This fire makes it the fourth brush fire on the south coast this year caused by downed power lines. Do we have a problem with a lack of maintenance by the power companies?

Indeed, 417. This is going to be an issue. Someone will sue SCE, if and when there is good evidence, for the fire costs. Off to read the news besides KEYT headline re: cause. Yes, I realize we consumers will end up paying...

The reason we do not have enough fireman is because they require us to pay them so much money, get early retirement, and have fat pensions. If we pay them a market rate then our tax money would be more than enough to fight fires with alot left over to provide more services. I love how people praise fireman for doing there jobs but you never hear praise for anyone else for doing their jobs. I love fireman - I just think they get too much praise and over way overpaid. Similar to politicians.

212, firefighters do not seek praise. Folks are appreciative of their sacrifices, dedication and service to the community, especially when they personally require their services. Traffic accidents, medical emergencies, hazardous material spills, fires of all types, and any problem you can't solve, call the Fire Department and they respond, 24 hrs. a day, 365 days a year. Whatever they're paid, it's surely not enough, and you would be the first in line to call for help if you needed it, I just have a feeling.

INSURANCE COMPANIES are NOT hiring their own firefighters because of lack of trust. It is all about the bottom line.

"Hundreds of local, state and federal firefighters battled the Texas blazes, but Josselyn is part of a growing new breed, a private firefighter employed by an insurance company. They respond to fires but spend most of their time educating homeowners on ways to minimize their risks before the first spark flies.

In Colorado, payouts to the victims of the Waldo Canyon and High Park fires are expected to top $450 million, according to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association.

"It's a huge loss-mitigation effort is what it is. The insurance companies have a huge stake in this," Hanna said.

In the wake of the 2011 Texas fires, Chartis Private Client Group, the New York-based specialty insurer of luxury homes that dispatched Josselyn and other firefighters to Texas, is permanently positioning wildfire mitigation specialists in the state, said Dorothy Sarna, senior vice president of risk management services for the group.

Starting this month, the Chartis service, which is complimentary to enrolled policy holders, is available in select ZIP codes around Fort Worth, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio."

I can't keep track of the fires, but in June 2011 I walked past a very interesting looking truck at the Encina Lodge and the driver was there, so I stopped to chat. It was a foam truck from an insurance company. They're simply protecting their ASSets. Who could not want insurance like that?! All it takes is money. And it's a really good idea. I'm glad Cold Spring Tavern got the same treatment during whichever fire it was. Well, that was fire-retardant wrapping, but I think they used foam also.

Only one insurance company has their own firefighters and that's Chubb Insurance. They do it because they can, it's a service they provide. Both Chubb and Chartis have fire mitigation programs also but Chartis doesn't have their own actual fire fighters. They have the ability to contract out at times but I doubt that is something they have set up for each state. Fireman's Fund tries to mitigate fire damage by donating money for fire fighting capabilities based upon the premiums they get in each city. They purchased a helicopter for fighting fires for SB in the past few years.

Insurance companies expect to make a profit because chances are the majority of people won't use the insurance they have. However, you will find that standard insurance companies will NOT insure homes in a high fire area. The people that live up in Painted Cave are probably insured by California Fair Plan, Lexington, Scottsdale, LLoyd's of London or some other non standard carrier. The folks that live up in that are that have insurance either pay a small fortune or they just have fire coverage through the Fair Plan. Fortunately the insurance companies require brush clearance, some more than others, but it helps.

To those of you that are bashing fire fighters it makes no sense. You must not have had to use them for an emergency. It doesn't matter what you need them for, big or small problem, they will rush to you, care for you, treat you with dignity and respect and are good people. I've had to lean on them many times in my life and am grateful and happy to pay taxes that pay their salary!

Some of the firefighters on this fire are volunteers from the San Marcos Pass Volunteer Fire Department. Not only are they unpaid, they must raise their own funds to supply and repair their own equipment, which of course receives heavy use during a fire. The Wildland Residents Association has a website that provides much information.

From a resident of the foothill area, a big "thank you" to all the first responders, including the Hot Shots. Also people like Ray Ford who went up and reported and sent pictures, the Independent, SB Emergency FB page, EdHat and friends and neighbors who kept us informed and offered us a place to stay if we had to evacuate.

Huge thanks to the folks who keep helped by making sure they had defensible space around their homes. That is a key component also and of course, the weather dogs.

It is sad to read all the negativity in this thread. Did any of the negative posters get off their butts and go help??

S.B. Ron, thanks for mentioning Ray Ford! (I came up with McCaslin whle searching the Indie. Should have looked at current news. D'oh!)
I was looking for his name when people wrote about EMI being at the fire scene, but didn't /couldn't come up with it.
Go to Independent.com and search for his name. His reporting was and is incredible.

no mention here has been made of the Painted Cave Fire Department which was the first department to respond. Painted Cave had 21 firefighters--all volunteers--on scene during the first and kept the fire out of the community. Furthemore, a brush-clearing project by Painted Cave Fire Department done in the off-season kept the fire at bay.
