Wow, sounds pretty shady. The business dealings are pretty ugly in the way the "friends" treated each other. Sad for the the family. Hopefully they can get some resolution soon.

Because he was wealthy and powerful, he (his homicide/?/ investigation), gets special treatment, including 100's of FBI man hours... In the realm of things, he's just like anyone else- isn't he?

962, can you name a murder in this town you don't think was adequately investigated?

The winery business seems to have an ugly underbelly. Very small percentage but not a good reflection on the industry. The economic downturn has hit the wineries but no one talks about it in the open.

962 - did you read the whole story? Sounds like he was playing a Ponzi scheme with his friends, of all people. He was clearly in a lot of debt and owed a lot of money. This is going to be a big story once all the pieces are put together. I have faith that they will find the person that did this.

Anyone still envy the "rich"? - what a complicated life he led. No, thanks.

@962, that's just your assumption. There might be a legit reason the FBI is involved. The man was involved in a lot of litigation so it's anyone's guess what the reason might be. The facts of this case so far definitely point to some kind of larger issue that caused his death, whether by his own hand or murder.....it seems pretty likely he was involved in either a ponzi scheme or had illegal monetary dealings. Clearly, that's not a "just because he was wealthy" reason for the FBI to be involved. If anything, he seemed to be struggling financially if you believe the Independent article.

What a sad tale. Is it me or have the crimes and killings really jumped up in the last year. Every news program seems to have violence: shootings, assaults, thefts, death at the hands of another, etc...

I'm surprised this case isn't getting national attention; never mind more coverage in this town. I agree it will probably gain more and more attention as suspects come out.

Big debt followed by murder suggests the possibility of loan sharking; the Henderson, Nevada connection allows mob connections to creep into speculation; the family lawyering up certainly adds to the overall tone; the FBI involvement further suggests an organized crime connection, or at least something bigger than a mere interpersonal dispute. Perhaps we're looking at a mob hit.

You people watch too much tv or read too many crime novels. The FBI dive team was involved. That's it. SBPD does not have a dive team. The FBI does and helps the SBPD and other agencies that don't have that resource when an investigation requires it. SHEESH!!

FBI can come in when there is bank fraud too - some types of crimes are automatically under federal jurisdiction.

The article starts out "The respected vintner". The article goes on to prove this guy was hardly respectable. Show me your company and I will tell you what you are.

For those questioning if it is a murder or not, if you had read about it before you posted here, you would know that he was shot in the back of the head. I know guns sometimes accidentally discharge, but I've never heard of anyone actually shooting themselves in the back of the head, and then jumping off a cliff. And for the person (#306) with the FBI Dive team theory, the Sheriff has a dive team which is routinely used by the PD. The FBI involvement is unusual for a case of this caliber. There is more to the story than we are told.

Granted I don't have much experience with the beach, but even I know when the tide changes it floods the sandcastle and takes it away. I also know that when it changes it washes ashore things that may have been placed or resided within it. What would have possibly been still in the area after many tide changes? Also, KEYT has been reporting from "a local news publication" that he had been missing for two days, but the "local news publication " does not say that.
