Might be too early to celebrate; but this sounds like really great news. The '90 Painted Cave fire, Zaca, Tea Fire, Jesusita -- all devastating to so many and disruptive to all.

Congratulations and thanks to all involved in working to knock this one out.

Humbly, William in Goleta

Ditto that, 751. After the disaster of how the Jesusita Fire was handled, this was a great effort and has restored much of my confidence in our local firefighters - glad to see they put their "lessons learned" to good use! Rock on, firefighters!

Cheers William. I live in the Trout Club and watched the armada of aircraft pound the lookout fire relentlesslly. Quite amazing to see and it made me very proud of our firefighting crews who chose a dangerous trade and performed it at a Journeyman level. Its all about experience and they have it. Thankyou again =)

I live in the foothills and thank goodness this didn't happen today because it is windy! Great job fire fighters!

@756 What do you mean about the Jesusita Fire and the way it was handled? There isn't much anyone can do when it's very hot and the winds are blowing at 40+MPH.

Thanks 773 - I couldn't have said it better myself. A BIG thank you to everyone who worked (most in very difficult/dangerous conditions) to keep property and lives safe. I appreciate your commitment to the people of Santa Barbara.

One day makes a huge difference. Thank God they hit it hard and fast yesterday. If it started today, there's no telling how bad it would have been. I woke up to a strong, hot wind and it was 80 degrees at my house by 9am.

Because there were NO other fires in the state of California yesterday, we had every available firefighting aircraft at our disposal....a lucky break for us and a good outcome....Combine that, with the hard work and dedication of Firefighters and other emergency responders and we had a recipe for success. Thank you to all the brave men and women who sacrifice so much for our safety....THANKS!!!

772, firefighting planes offered from other areas were turned down in spite of 60mph winds predicted for that night. The fire had already been burning for over a day at this point. Prior to that night, ZERO structures had been damaged. After that night...over 70 complete losses. Poor planning and poor execution were to blame. I'm simply stating the facts here - I think there is a learning curve to any process, and fighting giant fires is definitely something that will take time and many occurences to perfect.

795 was it the planes were turned down or was it that they dont fly at night and at a certain wind factor they are grounded?

Not out of the woods yet, but THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WORKING SO HARD to knock this thing out!

Love our firefighters! And yes, we should pay them MORE! I am not related to a firefighter, don't actually know one personally, but man, we NEED theseprofessionals!

I am not against paying fire fighters more, per se, but it seems that they must get paid enough because there are more people who want to become firefighters than spots available. So there must be quite a few people, and then some, who are willing to do the job at the current rate.

After the Jesuisita fire where I signed up to Twitter because it was the local authorities and not KEYT who told us everytime the Evac zone moved it was nice to see KEYT step up to the plate ( and the local internet presence didn't hurt ) .

Hey ED

With your recent outage... You should STRONGLY consider getting RightScale to handle Traffic spikes, scaling events and overall good web performance.

Just sayin....

The firefighters more than earned their pay yesterday - by saving an enormous amount of money by keeping the fire from spreading.

Thank you for your efforts and the smart way it was all handled.

Edhat should not be able to have posts flagged. Kinda takes away that thing called "freedom of speech". We heard the news now let people bicker back and fourth.

Firefighters are paid very well considering the amount of work they really do. You always see them out in groups not on calls. No one thinks about all the hours they sit dormant waiting for something to happen. Then when asked to work past their shifts they are all paid overtime. Don't kid yourself and think they aren't compensated. Most are lucky enough to be in the profession at an early age that they get to retire in their early 50's with one hell of a pension.

Glad they got the fire to move up the mountain and no winds to force it downhill.

why are we praising firefighters so much for just doing their job which they get paid ALOT to do

congrats to the doctors, sandwich makers, gardners, small business owners, engineers, et al. who go about their job every day that keeps are economy going and allow fire fighters to have lucrative tax payer / union backed jobs!

lots of more qualified people are willing to be firefighters for far less money - but the unions are too busy making sure Johny Firefighter can retire at 40 with a fully funded pension

What is up with all the anti-firefighter posts lately? Seriously! When your house is on fire and your family's safety is in jeopardy are you really going to complain to the man or woman who comes to rescue your burning butt that they get paid too much

Firefighters do get paid a lot, but I don't begrudge them a penny. I always told my kids when they were young always to respect firefighters, who, quite literally, will lay down their live to save yours. I think some people have tired of the overuse of the word "hero," now so often employed that it's lost any real meaning, but that's a different issue.

971; perhaps jealousy.

...and firefighters who start young "get" to retire "early" because they've lived longer in those years than a banker or electrician would by age 65. Constant adrenalin rushes, smoke inhalation (though that has gotten better lately with better equipment) mean most full time FF's don't age well after about 55. Heart attacks, lung problems, etc.
