2683.... what you fail to realize is that fires don't start when, where or how it's convenient for the crews deployed to fight it. There is no one magical solution for every event. In this particular case the terrain was so steep all the ground crews could do was defend properties closest to the fire while the air crews attacked the flames. And they did a brilliant job. There were so many resources in the air they needed an air traffic controller to keep them from bumping into each other. What would you expect the ground crews to do? Risk life and limb further than they do already? It's easy to judge when you sit watching the coverage on TV from the comfort of your LazyBoy.

Very good photo explanations of the term "fuel ladder". Keep the area cleared around (and here, certainly downhill from) your home by a minimum of 30 feet--much more if you can.

You will notice from the photos that the only retardant being put on the fire is being dropped from helos and fixed wing aircraft. ground crews just stood around and ate doughnuts all day long. The only way to contain a fire such as this one is from the air. Yet Santa Barbara County has only 2 firefighting helos and those helos are not capable of night operations. We have $96 million for a new jail but not one dime for firefighting helos.
