The squeaky rotor gets the grease.

Did anyone at CALSTAR think to hire Stringfellow Hawke to use Airwolf for the Cottage transport trips? It has stealth mode...

it is not good news if Cottage intentionally lied. Not good news at all. Particularly when there is no competition for hospital care in this town. We want integrity from our health care providers; not evasions.

My two year old learned his first four syllable word many months ago 'helicopter'. It's fun for a 2 yr old to hear the helicopters. It "was' (I hope) not fun for his parents to listen to their noise.

I give my thanks to everyone who wanked and crabbed and called Cottage and attended meetings -----anyone who had anything to do with cutting down on the cacophony has my eternal gratitude.

Our house isn't near Cottage, but we got a taste of the "Apocalypse Now" flights a couple times, nonetheless. All we ever felt was sympathy for those who had to deal with this brazen disregard of peoples' right to peace and quiet.

Well, hallelujah. Thank you CALSTAR. And to the CEO who said quieter helicopters didn't exist: pooky on you.

can't good news be good news from whoever made the decision? If cottage didn't have anything to do with the decision and just made the press release then its still good news and Cottage gets the assist for at least apprising the community and its still good news.

Maybe the deep pockets getting hit for all these "emergencies" finally told them to reign it in, because they quickly drained someone's budget dry with all the sudden all these "rescue" flights.

332553: Thanks for that update. Good to know that you're holding Cottage and Calstars feet to the fire, and good to know it's resulted in fewer flights.

This is just one CALSTAR helicopter they have a whole fleet.
One quieter chopper does not reduce 72% of noisy flights into Cottage. Nice attempt at spin though and the CEO did indeed say at meeting 2 that NO SUCH AIRCRAFT EXISTED!

All that said the number of flights is waaay down, thanks to neighbor pressure on the transfer flights Cottage were sneaking under the table they now seem to be using the helipad for it's intended purpose - EMERGENCY FLIGHTS ONLY.

I don't know if they are really down to the 2/wk they estimated, but I can now sleep through most flights. The pilots following the flight path & not flying too low REALLY helped. I'd also like to amend my earlier thanks SBCH statement to Thanks CalStar! Regardless, I'm happy it'll be a bit quieter when the flights do come through.

Regarding the noise inside the hospital, this summer we were in Cottage in the maternity ward which is located directly below the new helipad. A flight came in directly over our window as I watched and it was not loud at all, so please don't speculate about "the worst of it." The building and roof are clearly insulated for the noise of helipad traffic. Please give the architects and engineers some credit for being able to plan ahead.

72% of the flights will be quieter, 28% won't. We've called the FAA whenever one of the helicopters deviates from the prescribed flight path (over 101) or is flying too low (below 1000 ft although this is rarely enforced with helicopters).

But I believe the complaints have worked as the number of helicopters has decreased, maybe to the 2/week level promised in the planning document. Maybe they are only doing the real emergency trips now.

There was a recent press release that CALSTAR was replacing a bunch of its aging fleet. See their website. This has nothing to do with Cottage and everything to do with CALSTAR upgrading its old birds with new and quieter ones. I highly doubt Cottage or its neighbors played any role in aquiring a new helicopter that sometimes lands at the hospital. Nice try though.

The constant daily parade of these helicopters and the noise they produced was worth complaining about. Probably even the staff and patients in the hospital also complained too because they got the worst of it.

It was out of control. Glad to learn now it was also unnecessary. Good work Cottage for working on this.

Neighbors don't go looking for trouble. But this time trouble came directly to them ....and to the good people having to work in the hospital too. Everyone knows this is a hospital in their midst. But there was no reason to make it act like a war zone or movie set out of Apocalypse Now.

yes, I realized my comment was stupid. Patients won't hear the helo above them, right?

I'd like to thank CALSTAR not Cottage who didn't do anything but issue a press release.

Actually the Cottage CEO said at one of the meetings that no such helicopter existed!

Woohoo, less noise is great news. thanks again CALSTAR

As will the patients already there, SBRocks. I was there in '94, I think it was, for days, and they were doing remodel work including demo that I could hear from my room after getting out of ICU. Still didn't bother me, as all I wanted to or could do was sleep.
This is a great step, though I'm one of the supportive, non-complaining neighbors. Nice to see there haven't been any posts about the very recent landings, including one after 1 a.m. Monday, I think it was.
(I am also impatient, but as with Edhat taking our suggestions and fixing buttons etc., it does take time. I imagine it takes more time to buy a 'copter.)

Quiet helicopters are good. Unnecessary helicopter flights for transports that can be done by surface transportation are still wasteful, expensive, dangerous, and misutilization of our scarce healthcare resources and dollars.

We all pay for these helicopters one way or another (via higher healthcare premiums, taxes, and hospital bills), and they still should only be used when medically necessary.

I imagine that the patient will benefit too by lower noise while they are being transported.

Nice news. There is definitely a big difference in the noise produced by the different aircraft that have flown over our house enroute to the hospital. One was very quiet as I watched, but I have only seen it twice. The design looks similar to the aircraft pictured here with the enclosed tail rotor.

That should be a relief for the neighbors but then again I'm sure they will find something else to complain about. The color! It's too bright!! My eyes!!!
