i totally understand why many surfers dislike sups in the line up. they can be very dangerous as they're much bigger and heavier than your average surfboard. as a very large man who enjoys mellow point breaks i often find myself regulating unruly sup riders, i'm not intimidated by the size of their watercraft and if they're repeatedly wave hogging or disregarding the line up etiquette (back paddling surfers in position or shoulder hopping) they become "invisible" and should expect to be burned.

564, you are silly. The sport of surfing will never cease to exist because of SUPs. And they aren't "cheating". Aren't you cheating by riding anything? Give me a break. Surfcraft of all kind will be ridden at surfspots because the ocean is FREE. p.s. I'm a shortboarder, longboarder, bodysurfer and occasional stand up paddle boarder (when I can borrow one). The surfbreak regulates itself. If you drop in and are the deepest rider, it's your wave. If someone else drops in (in front of you) on the wave regardless of craft, you will hear the hiss and the boo's coming from the lineup. That kind of behavior won't be tolerated for long. And if you're that annoyed by beginner SUPs, don't surf mellow breaks. Go get some barrels in Oxnard.

724, Are you suggesting that surfers don't hit other surfers? Nonsense. Respect and tolerance are missing from this dialogue, I just keep hearing anger & entitlement. It's the old, "we were here first" mentality.

I am a surfer and I have been hit TWICE by a SUP board when the inexperienced rider either fell or jumped off. They are big and they get a lot of momentum and there are a lot of SUPers out there who are still learning how to handle them. That is a part of the problem- it can be dangerous for everyone else.

What is the problem? Is it the SUPs get more waves so the surfers are jealous? Or do the SUPs get in the way of surfers and cut them off?

You guys don't get it. Nobody has a problem with SUPs until they go to catch waves at a surf spot. Then it is like someone pulling their cart in front of you in a long supermarket line. If SUPs come out in force at a surf spot and no one does anything then the sport of surfing will cease to exist, such is their unfair advantage with that big oar and those 11 foot boards. The response you hear from surfers is one of fear and helplessness, and SUP riders pretend not to understand, they say we can all enjoy the ocean, but they know they are cheating, using that equipment to get waves instead of skill and physical effort. Not going to spoil this explanation with useless threats but really, it's a very big deal to us surfers. Like the end of the world. So you understand.

I was just out at Dev and it was nothing but smiles between surfers and SUPers alike. Everyone was having a good time enjoying the beautiful day and small surf. Fortunately, the edhat trolls are hiding behind their computers and not out in the water...

529P here, I agree John, your photo seems to illustrate peaceful cohabitation. I am referring to the clods who constantly malign SUP's like the ones who commented above.

To me it looks like the SUPs are well out of the way of the lineup and everyone's having a good time. What am I missing?

Interesting to see that pic as a "gang fight" when it looked peaceful from the air. Maybe it's good I haven't been out in the lineup for several years?

Surfers are becoming the gangbangers of the ocean, claiming territory that belongs to NO ONE, picking fights and generally acting and speaking in a way that must make the early pioneers of this sport cringe, or roll over in their graves. What happened to the stoke, the ohana, the live and let live mentality? This is sad.
