Very sad, I hope the man's family and friends are dealing with it OK. I would have done the same to save my dog. RIP.

Oh geez :( What awful circumstances!! A tragic accident indeed, nobody wins here.

There are clearly times when having your dog on a leash can save your life. What a tragic way to find that out.

I'm with 410. Get a leash. I narrowly miss dogs (except for one sideswipe) all of the time on Mountain Drive. It's a road. Control your dogs.

560P - sounds like you should control your driving

I (luckily) don't encounter too many dogs that are off the leash, but it does pose a safety hazard, 587. No matter how vigilant people are it's difficult to predict if the dog will run out in front of the car or not. Remember the man chasing his dog on the 101 last week?

Dogs should not be off leash on a road. There are parks, beaches, etc in this area where they can safely roam without the hazard of cars. It's not fair to put a driver in that situation and will potentially cause dog owners enormous amounts of grief.

NOT the time or place to discuss leashes! Get off edhat if you haven't a heart!

The owner of the pottery store on padaro ln also tried to save his dog from a train and died. People do not realize how fast trains are approaching and misjudge timing. Very sad.

Poor guy. Poor dog.

And I agree with 587. That was my first thought on reading 560's comment. Yeah, the Car is King. Woe be to pedestrians or bicyclists or dog walkers. Why should drivers share the roads? Tuh.

My condolences to this man's family and loved ones. (I hope they don't blame the dog. Or the man, for walking his dog off-leash.)

667p.... My thoughts run along the same lines with deepest condolences for the family and friends of the deceased. With La Conchita being even more isolated now they are having a hard time out there. I hope the family can find peace within themselves and can keep the dog. Just goes to show you that one day you are taking your regular walk and in a split second your life and your loved ones lives and perfect stranger's lives are changed forever.

A client of mine had just left the surf at padaro ln when the man and dog were killed. The train had just stopped; the scene was gruesome and he will never forget it. He said,"I am just grateful my kids were not with me to see that."

I saw a guy dash in front of a passenger train on State last Tues. night & really thought he'd be hit. He heard the warning signal (bells?) as the gate came down and jammed down the street to beat the train . This a train around 5-7 cars long - a 30-second delay. I felt really bad for the train engineer, who was laying on his horn. Would have tried to identify this dude or call SBPD, but he was in the wind. I couldn't see the front of the train, wouldn't be surprised if it brushed him as he crossed - too close for me and that train driver.
