I think she taught at Laguna Blanca and Montecito Union. Then known as Harriet Bill.

This is why we don't vote to get rid of Three Strikes and you are Out on the November ballot. We build new prisons because people make choices whether they want to live within societal norms or not. And when they don't, then society needs protection from them. That is why we have jails. Not to punish or rehabilitate anyone, because that is in inside job. But to protect the rest of us from life's bad actors.

Yeah, we should just incarcerate everyone since we already have a higher percentage of our population in jail than any other country. Jails! Jails EVERYWHERE! I say we build a jail in every neighborhood, it's the only choice that makes sense. How else are you gonna make sure no one does any bad things?

Many of the inmates doing time on 3-Strikes have one felony and acouple misdemeanors it's BS Prisons are full not all the inmates were violent before but will be after doing 20 years on a shoplifting charge. Plus this 3-Strikes law is a 2 parter it takes out the Death Penality. You can vote for what you want but I think some people that commit murder need to fry, and that goes for child molesters too!

I think 1000 hours of community service in a Cancer Ward would be an appropriate punishment for her. Wearing a sign that says "I pretended to have cancer to scam an elderly person." No need for jail.

This is sad for all parties involved. Including Harriet, who remains innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Why do you think community service organizations are prepared to deal with monitoring the bad guys when they do their time? How well is that working. Answers with facts, please. I understand former UCSB Chancellor Huttenback never did complete his public service hours for wrong-doings decades ago. What about the real slimeballs and the crooks - how willing are they and what value do they really get doing their "community service"? The price of a free society is a larger number of prisons - it all balances out. Either take away everyone's freedoms and reduce the potential for crime accross the board or let others who can operate within societal norms continue to be free, and throw only the scofflaws in the slammer. The number of prisons is a testimony to the depths of freedom others can enjoy.

We have the highest recidivism rate in the universe as well as here on Earth. Since we don't believe in rehabilitation, we get to put the same people away again and again, at huge expense to our treasury, so that some private prison contractors and prison guard unions can make a lot of money at the expense of everything else we need the government to do, such as edumication. Man I'm in the wrong business! Never mind that other nations right here on Earth have figured this out and have low recidivism rates. We can't do that! It's too hard for simpletons to get. So lets lock 'em up until we run out of money and all our kids are dumber than hammers! And lets equate pot heads with murderers with scammers, it's all the same, right! In a black and white universe it is.

Harriet had many years of the good life in Montecito. Sadly, she lacked and lacks morals now. Sorry, but I can't feel sorry for this shallow one dimensional looser and crook.

Harriet Lions was never a nice person. I knew her when she was married to Michael and was Harriet Bill. Her then-husband owned a men's clothing shop in the upper village in Montecito that he inherited from his dad. Harriet and Michael belonged to Knowlwood Tennis Club, had au pairs for their children, housekeepers and all the rest. Unfortunately, Harriet was a real biotch to her staff and acted very superior to almost everyone. She and Michael divorced and I believe she married a couple of times after that...she became a teacher at Laguna Blanca and tried to sell educational books on the side, which seemed like a scam to me. I'm with 212P - Harriet had a lot of very posh years and got so desperate and greedy that she wound up being a common criminal. Lock her up and throw away the key. Please.

Ditto last comment. Harriet's shady past goes all the way back to UCSB in the 60s, when she stole jewelry and items of clothing from her roommates on Del Playa. Hasn't changed her colors.

When you have a society in which the wealthy and well-connected get away with massive scams and legislative looting, then unfortunately some people will feel that they are equally entitled to get away with whatever they can. It starts at the top, and has taken us several decades to get to this point. Unequal protection and application of the law ends up with disrespect for the law. The foundation of respect is the legal application of justice, without that, there is social breakdown. The highest percentage of incarceration in the world that means too many people do not respect or believe in the fairness of the system. Also, incarceration is our societal choice for dealing with mental illness and addiction. We will someday look back upon this as barbaric.
