332444P Huh? Orb weavers don't leave their webs up for more than a day...two at most. They constantly replace them.

This time of year, no young orb spiders. They're all grown up and old, in their own Charlotte's webs, waning in energy as the cold comes. Notice how their webs, perfectly spun in the spring, become more and more irregular, with more holes, as the spiders age.

How does God hate us if spiders are so - what? ugly? scary? helpful? pick one. I agree they are nasty and I won't touch one with a ten foot pole but others disagree and think they are great. And they do eat the nasty things for us.

At the side of my house, an orb weaver built a giant web. It overhangs the steps, but as you walk down to the last step, the web hangs just high enough that there is clearance for someone 6'2". Almost makes me think some of these spiders know to plan for human "collision" with the web.

The OP's spider and mine look to be about the same size. The orb weavers can grow bigger than this, and 073 has it right---looks 40s to 50s (in human years).

Love, love, love the orb weavers. We don't need to put up fake webs and spiders for Halloween, we've got the real thing!

Not a new spider. It's middle-aged if it's a day. . .

Glad it isn't my house. I look at that and think of how many babies it can have. And how many babies they can have.

Those who are affraid of spiders coincidentally hate gnats. Hmmm... Go figure. Spiders are great!

Beautiful orb weaver. They are good spiders. They eat other insects. Not sure I would want to have to duck it to leave the house though. For sure I would forget and get grossed out :-).

It's that time of year again. Got a big one just outside the door, have to duck to avoid the web. Needs relocation....
