331459: Anyone know what the price/hour it is to operate the SBSO (and other) helicopters? bird cost plus staffing costs? And has there ever been any serious effort made to recoup these costs from those rescued? I am guessing "no" on the latter question since it is to the public benefit, generally, to not discourage people from calling ---- but on the other hand, ambulance services/AMR charge and knowing of the $$$ at least makes people rethink about whether the need is serious or not. ...Maybe this should be a separate Question/Answer.

Same old story. I know I'm tired of reading all the complaints every time there's a hiker that needs help. Get over it people. Take deep breaths. Count to ten.... Reeeelaaaaax. It will all be ok :)

All the people involved in Search and Rescue are volunteer and the resources are gained with grant money.
No tax money is spent rescuing people who do not know how to plan properly for a hike.

Trained medic on on dirbike with a backpack full of supplies could get to anyone on any trail within 15 min from say a fire station in Montecito. Wonder if they have ever though of that as an option?

492: air costs and those staffing them are all volunteers? Good to know that in these very tight County budget times when so many departments are being cut. Colorado has a volunteered $3/year card to help offset costs, but in this state and the outcry against the stupidly named Adventure Pass few would probably contribute. For more: link

This is getting a bit silly now. These are just foothills. Why can't a team go up on foot (especially if it's just at 7 falls) or bike and walk/carry hikers out?

WHY can't we do something about these helicopters? I live below the Old Mission and one flew over, thought it was going to land atop my house (there is a nice flat spot). This was just after dawn sometime. Who needs this noise? We lived for all this time with no helicopters, and suddenly they are an absolute necessity? Who's making all the money on these flights? I think this needs to be stopped. Now.

I wonder if the "adventure pass" vendor had to pay for the air fare for all the flights, if suddenly we would see a drop in flights? I agree that there are times that the helicopter is needed, but it seems more often than not, that some well placed water stations and maps would be of more help. Of course, if you don't realize you need water or a map for a hike maybe you don't have a lot of business taking hikes in the front (or back) country

You people are so funny! The rescue helo has a mechanical failure which delays an air response to a distressed person on a trail in the front country. Ground units had no delay but were still not able to reach the person before the person dies. The rescuers are the bad guys. The rescue helo makes a timely response to a distressed person on a trail in the front country. The person recieves assistance and survives. The rescuers are the bad guys...because the helo WAS used and it also makes too much noise. Looks like whatever happens, the rescuers are the bad guys. No one is ever going to be happy about how assistance is given to those in distress in this county's rural areas. I applaud the rescue personnel in Santa Barbara County for their dedication to an ungrateful population.

The first Montecito rescue this morning was of an ill mountain biker up Romero. Montecito Fire was able to drive up and bring him down in a vehicle. This afternoon's Montecito trail rescue involved an ill hiker up past the Falls on San Ysidro Trail. A paramedic was dropped from the County "Fire" helicopter. The patient was assessed by the paramedic and it was determined that the patient needed to be helicoptored out to a local hospital. Montecito Fire and Sheriff's Search an Rescue participated in this rescue. It's pretty hot in the front and back country these days.
