If it was Hope at Lincolyn they were taking down a DUI Suspect, who had been tooling around in his black Audi earlier in the day. I guess when he heard police were comming he decided to go in the house. They had Fire and Medics stage around the corner in case they had trouble with him. It was a good idea that he gave up and went along quietly...I don't know anything about Animal Control being there Sunday evening they are usually home..

Animal Control available at 8 p.m. on a Sunday? Hahaa! Yeah, like THAT will ever happen! Animal Control keeps hours that make bankers envious.

Oh, wait...is Hope Avenue in the city or county? I'm talking about city Animal Control. Maybe county Animal Control is more in touch with reality than their city counterpart.

Are you disputing what the OP saw, Rex or just on a rant? They do come out on Sundays for emergencies. They work with the police so perhaps they were requested?

@424: It's been my experience that city Anmal Control won't respond to ANYTHING once the sun has gone down or on weekends, including a critically injured possum I once found in my yard. While it was "only" a possum, it was still a living creature in pain. That was when I started losing respect for Animal Control. Since then, it's only gotten worse.

Roger: I think you're right. But at least we won't have to worry about Animal Control spanking us. Oh, wait, maybe we will. It's after 10 a.m. on a Monday. They could be open.

Call WILDES at 687-9980 or ART at 896-1959 anytime for injured possum or any wildlife anytime.

SBARTS: add: Please call the SBWCN for injured wildlife 681-1080, in Santa Barbara City, Goleta, Carp, etc.; Call ART for wildlife in Santa Ynez Valley; WILDES only does raccoons, I think.

SB City Animal Control, part of the SB Police Department but a clearly minimally valued part, is open 8-4 M-F, 963-1513

Rex: Lose respect for the people who make the decisions to cut hours and people, not the AC guys. When I volunteered there years ago, they worked on weekends (maybe just Saturdays, I'm not sure about Sundays), but the I think due to budget cuts they had to get rid of people & cut working hours. I had great respect for the people who worked there, they were good people I liked to talk & work with - I don't see how it's their fault that they aren't open more hours, they certainly didn't make that decision.

It's true that Animal Control rarely is available at critical (injured wildlife) times. Thank you, 506, for posting those numbers. Those numbers are going into my cell phone.

I have seen Animal Control patrolling the Old Mission lawn and over at St. Anthony's seminary-----at dusk, on a Sunday. But that was years ago. It is all about "complaint-based enforcement" now.

When it comes to Animal Control harassing off-leash activity, I'm glad dog owners get one or two days per week where they don't have to worry about being ticketed. Happy dogs.

@602: I think the people who work at Animal Control are just great. It's just that their office is never open when you need it. I think this screw-up started when the PD took over Animal Control. Point of fact, when you call after-hours, which is most of the time, you have to deal with someone at the police department, and it seems like whoever you talk to has the power to make executive decisions as to what constitutes an emergency. Unfortunately, nothing ever appears to be an emergency to them.

Rex, please look into or consider staffing issues. I know for a fact that they are understaffed. I know for a fact that they reply to emergencies. Yes, they are a type of officer, but carry only tasers. I don't remember the definitions of "sworn" versus whatever is appropriate. They wear bullet-proof vests on the job.

What DID all those poor injured and sick wildlife do before we were here to help them? Just like all those dumb hikers.

Don't get me wrong, I've worked with animal care. Animal Control works with all the local non-profit agencies. Nor do they trap or kill wildlife, unless it's euthanasia for medical or public health reasons. You need brain pieces to test for rabies, for anyone who doesn't know.

The officers of City Animal Control care deeply about animals, especially the officer who was involved in the arrest last night. What was a four person dept. a few years ago is currently two people -- who are technically always on call. Hard to get a break when you're understaffed and on-call. It's a thankless job and they save a lot of animals.

Do you get out of bed to go on emergency calls? Do you think you know what they do during a shift? I think emergencies might be defined by law, like vicious loose animals and bites.
I wavered about posting, but felt I had to speak up. Thank you, SB Police Dept. Animal Control Officers.

True, their office is never open, at all. There's no one to be there; officers work in the field. Yeah, you have to call the PD. Rex, I'm not attacking you, I hope I didn't come across that way, I'm addressing the community through you. thanks, peace out.

I've never had a problem with Animal Control officers, it's the fact that they just are seemingly never on duty when you want or need them. It probably IS a matter of downsized staff. (Although I first noticed this problem three or four years ago). My gripe is that for whatever the reason, Animal Control really does keep bankers' hours. If they're that shorthanded, perhaps they ought to think of consolidating with County Animal Control.

Consolidating with County Animal Control? Now that is going from bad to worse consider how little funding and how bad the management issues are with County Animal Services. County does not put money into Animal Control. What's worse is their department has fallen down under very poor management in the last two years, turning away from rescources that were once available. Both Animal Controls would be better run if taken out of the hands of the government. Check out the Marin H.S. they do a fantastic job of Animal Contol, could name a thousand other such places that do a far better job for their communities Animal Control Services by allowing it to be run by animal behavior professionals instead of a government entity, but there is a word limit here.

I've dealt with County Animal Control on a few occasions. The most memorable was calling in around 6pm for a stray pit at the Elwood parking lot on Valentine's Day (girlfriend and I were supposed to be on a date, not babysitting a stray pit) a few years ago. It took 4 phone calls to dispatch to convince them that someone needed to come out and the non-english speaking employee who arrived didn't have the courtesy to call dispatch to tell them that he was enroute or his ETA. When he arrived, I had to call dispatch to tell them that he was there. WTF??? By the way, I know this has absolutely nothing to do with the thread. I'm just venting at our broken system.
