With millions of people going hungry in this country and the situation getting worse this picture of gluttony is disturbing.

If I could reach my neighbors' lemon tree, I would make myself a lemon meringue pie right now. Yum.

Actually, 287, I think it's pretty gross, too. I am not one to call wasteful on an fun event, but this is really disturbing to me, too. I know how to have fun, trust me. This isn't it. Maybe you need to be tolerant enough of other people's viewpoints so that you could learn something from them.

While I also found the pictures personally to be gross and somewhat disturbing, I really don't feel the need to pass judgement on those partaking in this harmless fun. You see 316, if you're going to, "Talk the talk", you should also, "Walk the walk" and YOU might learn something. By the way, I'll bet you're really FUN to hang out with.

357, I AM fun to hang out with!* As probably a lot of people on Edhat are, too. The comments here are specifically about opinion and I had one. Sorry if offended you so much that you lost perspective. I'm walking the walk...by standing behind my opinion and agreeing with another that was expressed here before me. So far, I'm not seeing a problem. *Unless you only consider speed eating mass quantities of food fun! ;)

To put this all in perspective: how many pies "went to waste?" How does this amount of wasted food compare with other festivals making the largest sub sandwich, largest pizza, largest vat of chili and ---- isn't there some town in Europe somewhere that has a tomato throwing fest each year? How much food is wasted when left on plates in restaurants and schools and not put into a compost? How much food went to waste at the Lemon Festival by being thrown into the trash? These pie-eating contests pale in comparison to the daily waste going on throughout our homes. How many people compost their kitchen scraps? I bet 95% of the households in Santa Barbara throw out pounds and pounds of moldy bread, uneaten vegetables, freezer-burned meat, you name it ----- every couple weeks! At my house, with four adults, we compost approximately six pounds of kitchen scraps every week. You'd be surprised how fast all the avocado pits, apple cores, banana peels, old bread, eggshells, teabags, meat scraps, coffee grounds, moldy sour cream, etc add up.

254, Awsome! Comment on "waste" is so true. People don't realize the benefits of composting. I have a worm bin and they make quick work turning kitchen scraps into "black gold" for the vegetable garden

I can only comment for myself, but maybe people here talking about waste could have been referring to the actual display of eating food for a contest rather than satiation or necessity? That's kind of wasteful imo. I can see how this would be in questionable taste (no pun intended) and doesn't really have to be literally wasteful beyond what is wasted in a restaurant because it's in a completely different context.

Just for balance, look at a pumpkin patch. This time of year there are hundreds of pumpkins. Some are very large and attractive. How many go for food? There are thousands of pounds of food that go to waste. But this is a price for fun. A few lemon pies are small in comparison.

Yes, it's horrific overall. I have no problem with lil ole Goleta's pies. Google "americans throw out food" Food Waste: Americans Throw Away Nearly Half Their Food, $165 Billion Annually, Study Says Reuters | Posted: 08/21/2012 That Man vs. Food show on TV infuriates and nauseates me.
