Why not cotton? If you google layer clothing hiking, you will find many articles that talk about the importance of layering when walking or hiking.

They indicated that the base layer of clothing should not be cotton and why. Talk to any salesperson at REI or other outdoor specialty sports stores, and you will be told the same thing. Layering is essential. One such online article indicates that the first layer should "draw sweat away from the skin so it can evaporate and cool you without making you feel wet and clammy." You're welcome.

The road to Pendola was re-opened about a week ago. So, yes you can go Big Caliete.

You can always go to Montecito Hot Springs.

50% of the (captured) water does not belong to the water company and the public does exert it's own lawful claim to a portion of those waters.

I don't know whom was sneaking into the facilities in 1910 but factually people always FREELY made use of the water in the creek beds especially on the west fork. In 1910 there were small 1 inch pipes that transported water from the spring source to the soaks and plunges. A significant portion remained in the creek bed.

It's not like the fees were cost prohibitive when one did choose to make use of one of the plunges at the bathhouse. Even though the last incarnation of the springs were called the Million Dollar Club it was not that elite and exclusive after all.

Let's talk about kids of 1910 but focus one why law abiding and well behaved adults today would benefit by ability to soak in these springs.

"You can always go to Pendola for the Upper Caliente Hot Springs or the one by Mono."
Not now. The road is closed to protect the red legged frog.

You can always go to Pendola for the Upper Caliente Hot Springs or the one by Mono. My grandma and her teenaged friends used to sneak into the Montecito Hot Springs at night, pre-1910 when she married. Kids! Haven't changed too much.

In the '80's I volunteered in the construction of the DePalma "N"-machine which incorporated mercury brushes. I soaked regularly in those springs specifically due to my mercury exposure. It is sad that we live in a society that sees them as nothing more than irrigation water for large lawns. There are multiple water sources, but three main springs. I have a copy of the mineral analysis and the lowest spring is an arsenic spring.
It is so sad we do not have tubs and easy access. I miss the old days.

Interesting that sodium thiosulfate has also been the quick-and-easy "fixer" in B&W photo processing since the the 1800s. A chemical of many uses - and fixes.

If you have local friends and family undergoing chemotherapy treatments they should get up and soak at the springs!
