The building you can see on the right is the same building that houses Brophy brothers etc. the naval reserve building that is now the Endless Summer restaurant, museum etc. and the the old breakwater restaurant is just out of sight to the right. This photo was taken just as a program of major redevelopment had been commenced which ultimately resulted in the marinas, launch ramp parking lots and the removal of the large hill between the harbor and the Playa Del Mar public swinmming pool which was there when this picture was taken. It took nearly ten years to complete.

Ouch, the word "vintage" when applied to the year 1956 makes many of us, well, very vintage. Being thus somewhat distressed I looked up some definitions of "vintage". Alas, there is this one: "representative of or dating from a period long past: vintage clothes". I must admit I do feel like some old, worn pair of shoes sometimes. But then there is this: "Characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic." Much better. Thank you for the lovely snapshot of the past.

#756 - Getting a slip was a little different in those days. The slips in the foreground were not owned by the city, but by a yacht broker. The rest of the harbor was all moorings. As I recall the water taxi charge to get to your boat was 10 cents.

So. The Breakwater Wall was there in '56. Ah . . . it all looks so simple and sparse and easy. The halcyon days, eh?

What a great shot from the past! Thanks for sharing! I wonder what it was like to get a slip back then. Do you think there was actually a waiting list to get a slip for your boat?

And I'd bet that just off to the right would be the old Breakwater Cafe.
