The Bacara is trying hard to accommodate the community these days. The staff are courteous and polite to visitors at the public beach, and their beach house food and drinks are reasonable (a mixed drink is $8 rather than $15 at the main resort, for example and a large enough for two people delicious chef made sandwich is about the same price). You can rent a stand up paddleboard or surfboard at the beach house in the summer.

We can only hope that this area continues to improve as a safe community beach area; hopefully the gas plant will go away some day.

Haskell's has been in continual use by the public for thousands of years and is really special to all of us living here (a large Chumash village and cemetery on the site was excavated, or rather pillaged, at the turn of the century). In the evening you can sit and watch the birds diving for fish, dolphins playing and the shore boats coming to the pier with the workers from the far away platforms. An interesting and beautiful place.

Right-on 354. Just a thought, people....society is made up of lots of people playing different roles-a sort of point-counterpoint system. This is a natural dynamic in nature, which should be found in every society-so that one side does not become too powerful. Some folks are "whiners" - others are only positive. There are a few different archetypes. In this way, we all strike a balance. BTW-I work at Bacara occasionally, but it's always hard to ignore all the problems out there...one of which is the fact that everyone is on edge, trying to make sure they don't do anything wrong...which makes for a very uncomfortable atmosphere.

@ 354 You are too wonderful, really. So well said. And whatever the reason, I am happy, happy, happy.

A short anecdote re: Bacara guests. I met the most lovely young couple at Haskells about a year ago. Early 20s. Italian, and both looked like models. Sweet as could be.

The woman asked me, so nicely, "How do they clean the tar off the beach here?" Hahahahaha. I replied, "No one cleans it off. Ever. It would be an impossible job."

Have to say the new owners are winning me over. They are really starting to show that they, at least somewhat, care about doing the right thing for the community.

This is the best news I have heard in months.I was hoping the new owners had more to offer than just a new flag.

321 maybe, maybe not. Alvin Dwornin's BS Condo project was totally in bad faith like everything else he did. The guy went back on his word countless times and this was not only a slap in the face for your "whiners" but also the Goleta city council. The former owners were about as arrogant as they come when it came to working with their surroundings. Pretty ironic when you build a 5 star luxury resort (that is falling apart now) on a tar filled beach about 800 yards from a gas cracking plant. The new condos would have been maybe 400 yards from the Venoco plant. Have you ever noticed the sirens and the signs? Hydrogen sulfide gas is a bummer when you are trying to get a massage.

I applaud the new owners actions and methods so far. No one is going to tear the place down and the "whiners" aren't moving away, but some reasonable coexistence would be nice.

I am sure this had everything to do with the economics of the project and not the hurt feelings of some whiners.

Very cool. I think the new owners are starting to see the light.

Smart move considering nobody stays at the existing location...
