896: Pathetic to have to lie about your candidates unethical behavior or edit comments to skew the issues like Noozhawk. Not only IRS, CA Fair Political Practices Comm. McClatchy Newspapers: Agro-Jal’s disallowed write-offs include thousands of dollars in home improvements for family members, including a bathroom upgrade for Maldonado’s house, club memberships, upkeep for a vacation condominium, and Maldonado’s costs for maintaining two horses. The IRS also rejected a write-off of some $26,000 for a giant aquarium in the seaside home of his father, Frank Maldonado, in Shell Beach, Calif. Frank Maldonado hosted the party for his son on Dec. 5, 2007. At the time, Abel Maldonado was running for re-election to the state Senate from the 15th Senate District. According to U.S. Tax Court documents, 115 guests attended the event, which was catered by Clemmons Catering at a cost of $3,686.03, which the company sought to write off as a business expense. The $3,686 tab came on the same day that he raised $35,000 for his state re-election race, according to McClatchy. A review of Abel Maldonado’s 2007 state Senate campaign expenditures found none listed for a Dec. 5, 2007, fund-raising event. Gary Winuk, the chief of enforcement for the California Fair Political Practices Commission, the body that enforces state election finance law, said that expenditures on campaign fundraisers must be reported. In the documents, Susan Braunz, an IRS technical services territory manager, wrote that she asked Agro-Jal to identify the invitees, their business relationship with Agro-Jal and “the nature of the business that was conducted.” “The taxpayer provided me with a list of initials representing the name of the guest and their occupation,” Braunz said, adding that the list didn’t satisfy IRS regulations. Braunz denied the write-off, saying that Abel Maldonado “was and is a California senator. The party could just as easily pertained to his political career rather than any business of the taxpayer. It has been well established that the corporation had deducted expenditures on a number of occasions in 2006 and 2007 that had nothing to do wi... [ more ]

Maldonado doesn't have any tax issues. His family's business has a legitimate dispute with IRS that is working its way through the resolution process. Pathetic to attack his family and then legitimate IRS dispute resolution rights. Please, is this all you have?

Rep. Capps has been a very active member of Congress, has an excellent voting record and has sponsored plenty of legislation. She is also a very nice and approachable person, and her office is excellent about responding to constituent concerns. Both Lois and Walter Capps had long and distinguished careers before they ever entered politics. As a tenured professor for UCSB, Walter Capps probably did have an excellent pension, as would be expected for any tenured faculty at any college in the nation. Maldonado, on the other hand, has spent his entire professional life in politics. He entered politics in 1994 at the age of 26. (Lois Capps entered politics in 1998 at the age of 60.) Maldonado is a career politician who for the last 18 years has been receiving government salaries and benefits, and will be eligible for a lot more years of collecting from a lot more public pension systems than Rep. Capps ever will.

896: Tasteless second paragraph as to comments regarding Mrs. Capps' husband Walter. No special button (poor taste) for that, so I'm typing it. Good day.

Is there a link for those of us who would like to check out the UCSB 'debate'? The info from KEYT didn't work. Thanks!

Voting strict party line virtually 100% of the time is not representing local voters with integrity, action or imagination. It takes no energy, action or integrity to rubber stamp legislation predigested by party bosses or attach one's name as a vanity action to legislation pre-written by someone else. This defense might win Lois the snowy plover votes, but only if they don't ask for voter I.D.s at the polling places.

Capps still doesn't remember she promised and put in writing she would leave after finishing the remainder of her husband's term? She has greatly overstayed her welcome.

891, that's just patently false. Capps has missed 2% of votes in the last 14 years. That's 243 of 10,220 votes. Lower than the average (2.5%). In addition, she regularly introduces (and thus sponsors) around twenty bills per legislative session. Sometimes more, sometimes less. This is more or less in line with the average. But whatever. What are facts, right? Who cares what somebody actually does, it's just easier to disparage them with nonsense :)

Latinos comprise the largest and fastest growing minority in California and the US. It is good to see more diverse representation both locally and nationally that tells the real story of our nation. Go Abel. You represent the best of the American success story. Capps on the other hand comes from the dependency public sector - both she and her deceased husband both being lifelong government employees living off government pensions represent the growing American nightmare- unfunded public pension liabilities. No wonder her voting has been a straight Democrat Party line - protecting and expanding the public sector is what Democrats do. Maldonado stands for expanding private sector to more jobs and more innovations to grow the economy; not stifle it with more public employee perks and benefits which is Capps life-long speciality.

806P, its funny that you say Maldonado would be a "eunich," considering that Capps has been one of the least active members of Congress over the last 14 years.

Interesting hour plus, but not really a "debate". I hadn't seen Maldonado in action before - what a politician he is, every movement, every sentence crafted beforehand, at least that's how he sounded. He also reminded of Das Williams; maybe Sacramento does that. As forCapps, she was not exactly sparkling, but sounded genuine - I missed the first 20 minutes of the streamed. I shall be glad to vote for her and was uncertain before listening to/watching Maldonado. It will be rerun on SBTV.

After years of having Gallelgy as my rep, a man who received 0% grades from every women's group in the country, I was thrilled after redistricting and the possibility of having Lois Capps as my rep. Maldonado would be a 'eunuch' in DC. He is pretending to be a moderate in a political world where moderates are not welcomed. He was never a farmer. His father was in cohoots with Pete Adam and family and became a slum lord in SM for migrant workers he could care less about.

I love debates! It's so much simpler listening to two people talk at each other for 60-90 minutes than it is to look at the records they've established over the years. My puny brain can't handle it!

Wasn't there a children's book about a little weasel and an old shrew?
