Unfortunate that it was a Hispanic male who was brandishing the handgun. This will yet again further the misguided belief that it's only Hispanic males who are responsible for most of the violent crime in our city.

Unfortunately Natureboy it IS Hispanic males that are responsible for the highest % of crime in our area, that's a fact. Due to poverty and gang activity that's a reality of our not so safe town these days. It's sad but true.

Natureboy, I don't want to have this idea that it is all Hispanic, but we don't see a lot of "Preston Smith " , or names like that brandishing handguns with 20 people the house running out when cops come.....

Nature Boy, the real unfortunate thing about this event is that someone got shot because they felt they were above the law and disregarded their fellow neighbors lives, when they should've just been asleep in their beds with their guns locked up.

I was trying to say without saying it that most crimes are committed, statistically, by a certain demographic of our community. I was afraid that saying it outright would subject me to some abuse.

NatureBoy: You could just leave it at Males. Males are responsible for almost all of the crime in this city...why single out one race...it is simply Males wasting our tax payer money by doing illegal/violent crimes that we all get stuck paying for. I would like an exemption from paying for crimes committed by Males...Im tired of subsidizing a huge industry.

093P, isn't Hope ranch on the Hollister side of the tracks? We just bought a house over here, but it's only because it's the only "affordable" area in SB/Goleta and it sure beats the heck out of let's see... Lompoc, Santa Maria, Compton..... I think it's generally a beautiful area... close to the ocean, close to the bike path, more mesa, away from fire danger, convenient to the freeway/hollister, good mix of average families, etc, etc.

Tracy, I sort've agree with you (I'm a male and have three sisters), but you also have to realize that women still do play a part. Your gender may not be carrying the guns, but the girls are the ones that run their mouths and are involved in relationships with these guys. If it was just dudes, there probably wouldn't be anything to fight over... :-)

Why does someone ALWAYS have to misguide stories and create racial motives about things? Newsflash. Brandish a gun in a cops face? Bam Bam Goodbye. It's not a color coded selection process wheather to shoot or not shoot. If you're an idiot and pull a gun, walk with a gun, hide a gun or do anything moronic in the presence of law ENFORCEMENT then, too bad for you.

That area has been in decline for years. This incident is a reminder that it continues to get worse. That whole neighborhood's value just took another big hit because of this. And when a certain area gets cheaper and undesirable guess who moves in? Can you imagine what people must be thinking that have property listed for sale in that area? Those people should be abel to sue based on value loss.

129- sue who? I once owned on a great street in City of SB. Neighbors moved in, had bad seed daughter w bad boyfriends. Caused scenes, etc. other places on the Mesa, or in san roque there have been swat raids, drug busts, periodically, no area is immune. Only difference is if you can afford 1-acre parcels somewhere. Otherwise every now and then even the best neighborhoods have hiccups. Otherwise pack up and move to Idaho. Oh wait, militias there.....never mind

Sue the person or persons responsible for the incidence. Police report and criminal conviction along with an forensic appraisal report proving damages. A 5 or 10 percent value loss on a $500k asset x however many homes were effected adds up to a lot of money. Bullets flying in a neighborhood is something that stays in peoples memories for a long time and is extremely damaging.

If a home goes up for sale in this neighborhood, it's still going to get snapped up. Inventory is low, and anywhere in SB/Goleta is a desirable place to live. Good, hard working, hard saving friends of mine would JUMP at the chance to get into a home in this area. Values will not take a big hit because of this. Wake up and smell the coffee.

@SHOREBIRD - Not sure the purpose of those "buttons" but they only bring me to a login screen. I don't think they're that useful if the tracking of the number of clicks isn't shown, like on social media sites. Edhat, is there an explanation for the buttons somewhere?

We live nearby this property and have watched the place go downhill. My hope is that the house is sold to a family and maintained so our property values go up instead of down. There always seems to be restless people living there...violence is never the answer.

According to statistics compiled by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the U.S. Department of Justice, which, last I heard was headed by the Obama appointee, Eric Holder, himself a Black, there is a total U.S. prison population of 218,107. Of this population, 81,343 are Black, and 76,006 are classified as Hispanic. That's a combined total of 72.1% Non-White convicts incarcerated in the U.S. as of August 25, 2012.

Bruce that may be federal prisoners, California alone is around 136,000 state inmates which does not include those in county lockups on local charges. Texas inmate population is around 160,000 and they have the largest amount of inmates with CA being 2nd. The best estimates is the United States has around 2.1 Million people incarcerated at this time. You need to include all the data state and federal to get the actual count.
