I have been almost hit by an suv that looked a lot like that while on foot near sbcc... I wonder how many of that make and model are driven by irresponsible young men in the area? Hmm... I hope everyone is okay, and thinks once or twice before drinking and driving. If you can afford to get loaded, you can afford to chip in to take a taxi to one of your buddies' places where you can crash out til you sober up enough to get to your car and be a sober driver....

328863P - people like this don't have friends. They have people that they use, and who in turn are willing to let themselves be used . . . up to a point. Roundabouts in general are quite safe for competant trained drivers. Ya gotta slow down a little (how much? that's where the "competences" comes into play). You don't have to slow down nearly as much as for a stop sign or a red light, so they keep traffic moving along in certain settings, but you do have to slow down (and be ready to slow down just as much as you would for a stop sign when circumstances warrant - that means full and complete dead stop for those of you who lack "compentance".) Too bad that rounsabouts are not very safe for pedestians.

Agreed, one less suv, why do they think they can drive like that. It takes a big effort to have a serious accident on a roundabout, which is a huge benefit.

Wasn't a whole crew just given permission to obtain drivers licenses from the Governor? I wonder if the driver falls into this camp? Moving forward? More like Upside down!

The runners were clearly young boys more concerned for their own butts than their friends' well being. Not that unusual for people that age..... may their parents be proud of what they've spawned. As for the roundabout... I love it. It works and relieves congestion. Only a tiny minority don't know how to maneuver in it and I only hope they'll learn to do so.

Doesnt really matter the circumstances of why they ran away. It's just not right, leaving friends behind that could be gravely hurt. No matter how much trouble you think you will get into If you can be responsible enough to drive a car ( obviously not ) you need to be responsible enough for lives around you. I agree with rethinking friendship of the ones left behind. That's not a trait I would want around me

@863 I think you may be loosely quoting the "No Man Left Behind" credo of the U.S. Marines. You have to consider many influencing factors here: (1) Likely these guys were all soused and/or drugged up (2) First reaction to such a nasty accident is shock (3) Self-preservation often over-rides good sense and (4) Perhaps some or all of those fleeing the scene are on probation, don't want to add to their police files and want desperately to avoid being found with drugs on their persons or in their urine samples. 815: Despite what we have seen on many Law & Order type t.v programs, or in the movies, "ratting out" your buddies is not a good or healthy practice. Fingerprints run through the system will probably i.d. the driver, and help round up the guys who raced off into the night.

864: it's only dangerous for incompetent drivers and those around said drivers, which is true for any other intersection or roadway. Roundabouts are awesome (as are right turn yields at 4 way intersections). Unfortunately, our planners aren't very bright.

That roundabout is dangerous, though. The whole intersection needs to be re-engineered..this ain't some sleepy, Aegean island town of 1500.

If I were those 2 left behind I would totally reconsider my friendship. Who does that? Even if you have the potential to get in trouble you don't leave ANYONE who needs help. Very sad moment for humanity. And they do realize they will be found out?

Interesting, my wife and I drove through the roundabout Saturday afternoon and we commented to each other just how fast people were entering the roundabout. From the south, you can enter going pretty fast, but from the north, the "curve" is much more severe. Based on the photos here, they entered from the North?
