The map is a "Bird's Eye view"overlooking the city from above Oak Park towards East Beach. It is framed by portraits of twenty Santa Barbara buildings of which four - and possibly a fifth - still survive to this day. If you Google -1898 Santa Barbara Bird's Eye View - you'll be able to see copies of it. - Neal Graffy

found a good copy on a site called historicmapworks. they have an interactive page where you can zoom in on each part . Pretty cool

The name on the building is "J P Lawton" for John Percy Lawton. He was a realtor. - Neal Graffy

There's a Lawton Avenue in the Rockridge area of Oakland, a subdivision laid out around 1910. I wonder if it's the same Lawton.
