@ Stace Although this looks like a building Nathan Bentz (Japanese Art and Curio Store) would have built, his shop was at 1229 State when he came to Santa Barbara in 1891 and later at 1226 State. @ Mielemai - It is. scroll up a few comments.
@202P - Regarding the Ford Agency. Sharp eye and a good memory on that! The building in the background is the back end of E. M. Fillmore Ford & Lincoln dealership. At one time it was a stable (and a large one at that) But I'm not sure if the stables had been demolished or remodeled for the car dealership at the time the photo was taken (about 1923) - Neal Graffy

I just noticed that the roof on the building right next to the1625 Castillo St. house looks an awful lot like the roof on the building next to the house when it was on State Street. Anyone else see that?

Thank you Neal for your information. I'll see if my grandma has any other photos although most were lost in the Sycamore Cyn fire of 1977.

Nathan Bentz possibly?

Here is some information I found on how and why Japanese design elements started to show up in bungalow designs:
--The Greene and Greene brother architects, best known for their rustic Southern California bungalows, were also heavily influenced by Japanese design. On a cross-country trip in 1892 relocating from Boston to Pasadena, the brothers stopped off at the Chicago World’s Fair and saw the same Japanese Pavilion that had so intrigued Frank Lloyd Wright.--I found this by googling japanese design plus bungalow history. How deep can we dig on the history of this house's design?! I am game!

There are actually two if not three buildings that were moved from the 1300 block of State to 1600 block of Castillo. One is the realty office (1302 State). The pitch of the roof seems a little off, but what you see on Castillo is the same building on State. It has not been turned around, the same front that faced State faces Castillo. Next to the realty office was a building at 1304 that had an octagonal or hexagonal shaped room on the State street end. It shows in the photo but is mostly blocked by the car and a palm tree. This building is to the right of the one on Castillo. The next building on State at 1310 may have also been moved to the corner lot at Castillo and Valerio. All this moving took place around 1926 - Neal Graffy

My grandma said the office was State & Victoria like Neal states above. Now I wonder what year the building was moved. Anyone?

Sorry for so many posts. I figured it out. Here's a photo of the house from today:

The door in this picture is on the left in the vintage Real Estate office photo. I'd say for sure it's the same house.

Hmmmm... i take that back. Maybe the roof orientation HAS changed.... i'm so confused now.

NATURE BOY helpful negative off topic

Dogmom: The roof orientation hasn't changed. There are TWO corner doors. The corner of the house, on the right, is a corner door also. The photos were taken of both different doors.

I'm sitting in front of the house now, with my iPad, and damn -- if they AREN'T the same house, then they must've been built with a prefab kit or something, because they are in almost every respect identical. Except for the roof fish mentioned in the other post. Like, identical!

DOGMOM - it is the same house. The picture from my grandmother-in-law can be seen in the thread edhat online posted (remove the

If the house that now resides at 1625 Castillo was the original real estate office on State Street, could the roof have been put back on at a different angle after the move? The corner entrance and the molding details on the roof are at a different angle in the two pictures.

#2 absolutely is the same house - 1651 castillo. Even all the detail remains. Corner entrance and all. Stunning!

Might all you knowledgeable Santa Barbara Historians recall that oriental style real estate office (1920s from guessing the age of the car) might have been moved from the supposed State Street corner location about the time of the earthquake?

It sure looks like the family home in the recent Edhat.

Any clues as to this real estate office from the background building? From the big tree?

Edhat is sure fun. :-)

The Santa Barbara Ford Agency, Homer C. Thompson Ford, was situated on East Victoria, on the left, half a block off State Street, in the early 1950s. Might that building in the background then of later have been a car dealer?

That is pretty cool. I'm the OP from the previous thread on that #2 house. Still haven't gotten back over there for a photo op, but it's on the list of things to do.

The Real Estate building was at the NE corner of State and Victoria. It dates back at least to 1896 to a previous realtor named John Percy Lawton - Neal Graffy

Yes....that second one looks like the house near 1651 Castillo St. Check it out on Google Street view (and look for that article thread here from a few weeks back)

Photo #2 looks like a house that was identified on edhat just a few weeks ago. Same lines and corner entryway. Are you sure it's on State Street? Maybe there were several with this up-turned corrners look; but it looks just like that other house.
