If you could take a one way trip in a time machine, with whoever you'd like to take, to that time period and never come back to now, would you?

@147: Can I take my DVR and microwave with me? If so, yeah, I'm there! My husky wants to know if he can come too.

Could you imagine if they would dredge west beach back somewhere close to that! It would be great to have that extra calm water area for paddleboarding, small boat sailing, windsurfing, etc. Now you a 100 yards of sand before reaching the waters edge.

I was born in Santa Barbara in 1955.This picture makes me teary for the way my home town used to be. Thank you so much to the person who submitted this. I accidentally scattered Fritos ( more than once) on the pool deck and kissed my first love by the pool.

It seems like the photo was taken from on top of the hill that used to be next to the plunge. Taken out to increase the parking lot. :-(

@379 After I read your comment, I took a good long look at this posted "photo." I think you're right. Check out the little "cabana" on the sand. What is that shadow?

This photo looks kind of computer enhanced, like computer art a pal of mine makes.

I use to spend a lot of time playing on that hill, good times back then. The plunge was only .25 cents for all day or if it was raining, for .35 cents you could go to the Arlington and they would play 3 movies over and over again. The house we rented on Kowalski st was $25.00 a month ( 3bd, 2 car garage and Big front/back yards ) rent to own .

We used to ride our horses on those 2 bare hills, the one to the left was called "Old Baldy", then a house was built on top (I'm thinking early 50s). It was quite a good size, but sprawling and looked low to the ground, not a monsterous "pink" McMansion that would be built today.

EMUWREN1 - its a hand tinted (colored) image that started as a black and white image. Very common for that era.

There is a site on the web that has hundreds of old SB photos. I'd post the link but EdHat doesnt let me... a little Google sleuthing will uncover it though...

I was in a swim meet at Los Banos in 1961. Dove in, forgot to close my mouth, came in last- if at all. Makes me smile- thanks.

The photo was taken from "Fossill Hill." Check edhat for 10/05 for the "Vintage Aerial Santa Barbara" photo. For a photo of Burtons Mound (Chapala, Montecito, Bath, Cabrillo Boulevard) see the Potter Hotel History in edhat for January 24, 2010. - Neal Graffy

Los Banos Del Mar Pool - I love it! My favorite photo!

The Plunge was the best! We would walk over there on hot days and swim. If the pool got too crowded, you could exit the pool via a revolving gate at the lower right corner of the building and swim in the ocean off west beach, then come back into the pool the same way. I think they stamped my hand so I could get back in. We didn't know "fossill hill" and just called the hill 'The Mound." We climbed around on it a lot. And you could find octopus in the rocks around the harbor . . .(sigh) . . . wonderful place!
