They had a few fire calls related to their air conditioning system and this could be related to some of those calls. It looks like smoke damage to me.

What that looks like to ME is tape marks. The vent was covered for some reason.

If you have to LOOK UP at a ceiling tile to find evidence of bad housekeeping, I'd say you might be a bit obsessive.

Here's what matters:
- the nurse and/or doctor washed their hands before touching you.

- the floor is cleaned regularly.

- the linens on the beds are changed after every patient.

- every tool used on you is sterile, be it a tongue suppresor, a syringe or anything else that breaks your skin or touches your wet bits (be they eyes, tongue, nether regions).

- there is minimal dust in the air.

- other patients who are coughing or sneezing are kept isolated if not masked.

No excuse for that.

Cottage is undergoing a major rebuild. Things are being done and moved a section at a time. It is possible that this is due to the fact that the lab will be moved in a short time so repairing the ceiling is neither a high priority or a good use of limited funds. 111 has it right. If all that is OK - don't bother to look up.

Old or new wing? New, yea a problem, old, not so much since its been around some 50+ years. Agree with 111.

One can tell by the photos the black marks aren't biological/organic; it's tape residue.

Looks like tape marks. I wouldn't call this a cleanliness issue. Poor planning, perhaps.

It's a hospital, aka a medical warehouse and industrial plant, not a 5 star resort. Granted for the cost you'd expect the service of the latter but you'd still have misplaced expectations. Seriously it's the stuff you can't see that will kill ya, not smudges on the ceiling.

When my mom was hospitalized with a case of double pneumonia the bathroom in her room was nothing short of disgusting. The toilet was filthy, there was mold everywhere, the sink was dirty, the floor was dirty. I have no idea if it was blood, vomit or diarrhea.

Whatever it was, I didn't want my mom having contact with it. We asked to have it cleaned up but after many hours and nobody addressing it, I brought in my own rubber gloves and cleaning supplies and cleaned it top to bottom myself.

The idea of black looking mold and germs from the former patient did not seem like a good mix with my mom's pneumonia. There was no housekeeping available, as far as I could tell, during her entire stay so our family just kept her room clean ourselves.

Cottage is a mess. They should take a look at their quality control people to start with!

The poster's reference wasn't tape marks, it was the dirt accumulated in the vent.

Good for you for questioning it.

I'm seen some things at labs around town that have made me take my business elsewhere.

Hey it's your health, if you don't take care of it, no one else will.

It's about cleanliness, not service. The vent is dirty and needs cleaning.

I think a hospital/clinic/doctor's office should be cleaner than a 5 star hotel. C'mon!

If that black stuff up there is mold, they are some BIG trouble.

Sincere compliments to whoever took the initiative and cleaned their mom's quarters when she was a patient with pneumonia at Cottage Hospital. Good deed!

Cottage is a human endeavor. :-)

Forgiving is said to be divine, but taking personal responsibility and actually doing a needed job yourself is just plain wonderful. "Thank you for being you."

======

How's for a philosophical? "As you go through life, leave everything a little cleaner and better because you were there"?

What a world we could have if every child were so carefully taught the negative of graffiti and the positive of elbow grease that he or she accepted and remembered through life.

I went with a friend who was having surgery recently and the hospital was pretty gross. They had her in a pre-surgical room that had stained sheets that had food (I hope it was food!) on them. I just don't think I could trust that hospital to do surgery without getting staph or something else from them if they can't even change sheets properly between patients.

I think it is a pretty big issue and it deserves discussion and complaints without being called picky since it can cost someone their life if they get something!

I spent 4 days at cottage (in the new part) and it was sooooo clean(even had the green soap and madacide smell)... Way better then the last time I spent time in the hospital which was about 7 or 8 years ago...

So my question is, when the OP saw this, did he/she just take pictures to share here on Edhat, or did he/she also bring this to the attention of the hospital so that someone in authority could do something about it? It's not enough to complain about something if you're not willing to 1)bring it to the attention of someone who can fix it or 2)Fix it yourself!

Fix it yourself and go to a different hospital.

For the first time in my many years in SB, I recently needed CH emergency room treatment. Overall, the service, staffing were good - I was pleased. However, I did notice one dirty piece of equipment and also photographed it with my cell phone and emailed it to Cottage. (Didn't receive a response, nor to follow up survey mailed to me.) Probably it is true, in the big picture, there are worse occurrences that occur in the hospital that are seldom seen, discussed or written about. Sometimes postings on the internet can bring faster results than reporting it to a person on site.

I can't think of too many places that actually have their custodial staff properly clean and dust every surface as they are supposed to.

I wouldn't expect a huge hospital to be the (good) exception.

I'd be more worried about things in there that you can't see, to be completely honest.

I work for the lab and will address the issue with management promptly. It is in the old section of the hospital and we haven't moved to the new section of the hospital. However it doesn't mean we cant address the issue now and see if there is something that can be done.

Sadly, 251, Cottage has a total MONOPOLY in this town.

There are no alternatives unless you travel to Lompoc or Santa Maria.

When we first moved to Santa Barbara I needed some lab work done so I called the lab to get a price on it. Since I pay cash, our insurance doesn't cover this, I'm use to nogotiating the price. Not only would the Samsum lad not offer me a reduced price their prices were way expensive from what I normally would pay.

I now buy my lab on line and take my scrip to a lab in Ventura What Samsum wanted $200 for I pay $69 and I an in and out of the lab in 10 minute.

We need competition here in SB

YEA for EdHat and the person that posted this. I don't care whether a medical facility is old or new, cleanliness is so very important. I guess that is why Cottage is having a lot of staff infections that I've been reading about. I understand that there was an article of the many staff infections in the Consumer Report magazine.

re:" - other patients who are coughing or sneezing are kept isolated if not masked."

A family member was in a CH room after major abdominal surgery. Another patient was brought in (to share the room) with projectile vomiting.. In other words, his entire system was clogged and he was spewing his dinner and drinks from the evening, all over the walls, floors and the curtain between him and the patient next to him. The most disgusting unsanitary thing we have ever seen. The other disgusting thing is they kept the two patients together for several days, even after pleas from nurses, interns and docs to move the surgical patient to a clean room. This happened in 2007.

We filed a complaint after leaving CH and the next visit our family member was put into the "presidential suite"..

A surgeon recently told me that the single most helpful thing you can do to protect a loved one from catching MRSA in the hospital is to take charge of cleaning their room surfaces yourself. Wipe everything down with industrial surface wipes, repeatedly, because the housekeeping staff is just not doing their job. Just pay attention to how the nursing staff will use the potentially contaminated doorknob to enter and then proceed to touch the patient and surfaces, carrying the staph etc from other patients into the room.

OP here - am aware there are of course good qualities about Cottage as well. We can recognize shortcomings, and also the positives of our local CH. Perhaps we need to share the positives as well. Our family is also grateful for the good care received. Let's add a step relating appreciation for CH.

just spent a few hours at Cottage ER room was very clean, sure the walls are marked but that's from hospital equipment. Every staff member and volunteer that I had to deal with was very nice and accomodating to me, a family member of a patient.
