don't forget, UCSB was one of the 4 original ARPANET nodes. we now know of this technology as the "internet."

040 - gee, thanks for your positive comment. I "only" earned a BA in history at UCSB. But trust me, I was NEVER shown any disrespect for that, over the past 35 years. UCSB has a good rep - the other posters should get a clue....not to mention that I'll never forget taking a "make-up" history class with Dr. Grahamn in a church in Isla Vista after the "riots" in 1970.....

Professors who are great researchers often are terrible teachers. Many grad students are too inexperienced. The system no longer rewards good teaching. The UCs should be called on this, especially given the escalating costs of attendance. I think these rankings are bogus when it comes to the quality of an undergraduate education.

883P - I selected UCSB over Stanford and Berkeley because (at least in engineering in the 70's) it was far superior to my second and third choices for undergraduate instruction.UCB had undergrad classes taught by grad students (some good, some not so good, a few who were unable to converse in English). Stanford and UCB both devoted their resources primarily to the grad schools. I had exactly "one" class at UCSB taught be a grad student and he was a very special case and was watched by a hovering professor. All my other classes were taught by professors, or by guest lecturers renowned in their fields. I used most of the same labs and equipment as the grad students too. Looks to me like they are still doing well in these regards at least in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

Great school for engineering and the faculty has been improving over the decades. I know some grad students and post-docs there.

Great school for the sciences! Congrats UCSB! By the way the latest "party school list" according to Playboy had NO mention of UCSB.

Good schools of physics and chemistry. The rest so-so.

It might have an excellent research faculty, but it's not a great school for learning as an undergraduate.

Why are so many edhaters seemingly "anti-UCSB"? It's an excellent school.

But top ten party school. Just goes to show you where the students put their energy!
