I believe that's a cv-22. I LOVE them! I saw it come in and ran to the backyard with only my iPhone which I would have grabbed my D7000 to shoot a bunch of shots.

A big waste of taxpayer money. Dick Cheney attempted to kill the v-22 program when he was Defense Secretary. The dems forced the project through because contractors spread the wealth among the dems in Congress.

The dems take money from defense contractors? I thought they wanted to take wasteful defense spending and spend it on education. $35 billion dollars for 400 V-22 Ospreys. In a real war (like one against China) the V-22 fleet would be shot down or crashed in a very short time, with no ability to replace losses because the V-22 is so complex it takes years to build, not weeks like the good old Heuy.

Those propellers look like they would hit the ground if spinning in their current position. They must taxi with them at an angle?

816 - Indeed you are correct. The Osprey takes off like a helicopter with the propellers acting as blades, once in the air, the nacelles rotate forward and it flies like a conventional plane. Then when landing, the nacelles rotate up, and the plane lands like a helicopter.

They don't usually need to taxi - they tilt the prop/rotors up and take off like a helicopter. But when they do taxi they tilt the rotors just slightly forward from the vertical takeoff position. You can see video of one taxiing on youtube if you are so inclined.

My friend and I saw one flying over the 101 near the Van Nuys Airport two weekends ago. I didn't know what it was, and asked my husband when we got home. It was really different looking while flying. Cool that there is one here in SB for a visit.

thanks also to the OP for the excellent LINK explaining the use and merits of the Osprey. Had no idea they are so fast, and so manueverable.
