Sadly, the suicide barrier looks like it is pretty easy to climb over. Probably only only will delay a determined person a few seconds.

DARYL, that's probably because most of those "suicide attempts" were cries for help, and the person never really intended to kill themselves.

Nature Boy: Thank you very much for posting the link to that New Yorker article. It's a very worthwhile read. Most enlightening of all was the statistic that 94% (or was it 96%?) of the people who were prevented from committing suicide when found on the bridge turned their lives around and never tried to kill themselves again.

563-change has been the only constant since whenever time started. The problem with our media and to a great extent our goverment is that they dwell on negativity and fear mongering. That is how the media and goverment stay in business. Every cliche you mentioned has many sides to it and most the other sides are not negative. Opportunity abounds in this country. Don't let the fear mongers close your mind to it.

Humans are a social species; we are built to care, and that is why people matter to us ... most of us; some fraction (up to 20%) are sociopathic and don't care about people other than whether they are usable.

628: the night doesn't necessarily at all look darkest just before dawn! Have you looked; have you been out there in the moonlight? Have you watched the slow brightening of the day as the earth moves? I agree with Yin Yang and I also agree with public dollars going to prevent, if possible, suicides in the same way I agree with speed limits and safety railings. Having tried to suicide when I was 19, I can appreciate how black can be blackness and hope this person makes it past whatever are her demons. It is possible to do so.

563, in your philosophy, is the glass half empty or was there ever any water to put into the glass? The night looks darkest just before the dawn.

Yin Yang - Good points. "Que sera, sera. Whatever will be will be, que sera sera." "Don't worry - be happy." With thanks to Doris Day and Bobby McFerrin.

YIN YANG. It's a good thing our brains won't allow us to dwell on how inconsequential we all are. Just look up at the night sky . . .

That fence they installed, only made the bridge a bit taller to fall from... :smh: What is code 4, Roger? Did she jump? I hope not! She's too young...she can get help! She matters!

Even 1984 did not turn out to be 1984. Be concerned, but no cause for alarm. Be active, but do not retreat because that is just plain lazy.
