Came to post almost verbatim what 327235P wrote. Glad I'm (again) in the Majority. First time was when we voted NO on this new jail. How did this get approved? I'm voting all incumbents OUT next election.

It's easy to spend other people's money.

Next we'll be voting on the extended benefits of the jail keepers for full retirement, 20 and out. If you're one of the lucky ones to get a job there...you might cash in. This group of supervisors, sheesh, who do they even represent? How do they get re-elected? Obama disciples? Must be. Kool-aid 5Cents a glass.

Why not house North County people in North County? Pretty sure that's where most of our county jail population comes from anyway. Keep your criminals in your community, instead of bringing them to mine... it would also save on gas and time.

Really a BOLD move. Use someone else's money - from a State that has to borrow to make the grant! I can't wait for the next step: "We need to raise your taxes to keep the new jail open! Why, if you vote 'Yes' on this measure (And surely it will come.) it will add ONLY $5 a month to your property tax. That's what happens and that's how it is justified. I have hundreds of dollars of ONLY added to my present property tax!

This is being brought to you by "realignment" which holds counties responsible for housing many lower level inmates and promises to fund the facilities necessary to do this. On next ballot is Prop 30 which would dedicate money to this job if passed. There are good and bad things about this reorganization. Good is that local govt should consider the impact on local taxpayers of local prosecution policies and incarceration near their home is better for the rehabilitation of inmates. Bad is that this is still a grossly expensive way to deal with crime and punishment. Sick part of this is that the jail is being sold as a mental health facility! Had the money been spent on providing beds in south and north county for the desparately underserved needs of the mentally ill we would have done immensely more to alleviate the street crime, homeless and ugly social problems in our community than will be accomplished by this Cops-Prison Industry-Policitical Complex boondoogle.

Wow. If only the naysayers knew how it really worked. We have no ability in this county to jail offenders because the South County jail is all there is, and it's over-crowded. AB109 mandated offloading prisoners from prisons to jails. Those felons are de-facto out of prison early, because this county cannot jail anyone. Santa Maria, Lompoc and other cities round up their vagrants, send them to jail, where they are released into the city of Santa Barbara because this county cannot jail anyone. Good for them, bad for us. A north county jail would help IMMENSELY. Start looking a little deeper, people.

When is the next election to remove these people, sheriff included? There is something very wrong with elected officials that do not listen to their constituents. We will be paying for this jail one way or another. The sheriff and supes are basically saying if voters won't give them money to do what they want they will take it another way. They simply do not care what we think. Where do you think the federal money came from anyway?

Public monies to support private businesses. $80M would go a long way in after school programs, job training and higher education, to help at risk youth find a better way. Boo on the County Sups.

201, you raise a very good point.

Some years ago, had we voted to split Santa Maria and Lompoc into their own Mission County, with Santa Barbara staying Santa Barbara County, we would now be looking very pretty: budget wise, political wise, economy wise, you name it.

They would be like Merced County, and we would be like Marin County.

If only we could take that vote again today.......

Of the millions that SB County will pay to build and operate the new jail, how much of it comes from revenues from North County? Or is this another case of the South County liberals subsidizing the conservatives from North County? I wish we would have let them split off from us so they can fix their own problems.

I guess that is what happens when you make a law for everything.

We need fewer prisoners, not more prisons.

The US has the highest per capita incarceration rate.

There is something very wrong when we have more people in prison per capita than Russia.

Brilliant!

The mandate of the voters means squat here in SB County. Gimme a break.

Seems like this might be a very challengeable decision in court.

So?

I want deportation for all "prisoners" either back to their country, or boot them out of the US so that we dont provide them with room, board, and education, and extra curricular activities. How about revoking citizenship for Americans who do something which would land them in jail...just get out of the US....I think many felons would think twice if losing citizenship was the consequence. As it stands now.....many felons prefer their life in jail to one on the "outside". Think of all the money we would save on these losers......I vote for kicking all felons out of the US.

Sheriff Brown does not interpret the defeat of his bond measure as defeat of the new jail. His inner circle are the only folks he hears, and they tell him as long as funds other than a new tax are used, the public is fine with a new jail.

$91 million for 376 beds. That's $242,000 per bed. You could build 2 detached homes or 4 condos in Santa Maria for the cost of one jail bed.

EXACTLY! I voted no too, so did the majority of our community. They should all be fired.

Now that we've got the money to build it, where will we find the $11 M annually the sheriff's department will need to staff the new facility?

Oh yeah, I forgot, reductions to the budget for parks, beaches, road maintenance, etc.

When are we going to shift our thinking? We need to prevent the crimes in the first place and if they do occur, we need prevent the offender from re-offending . Our current system has a terrible record of preventing re-offending. Currently, our jail system is not much more than human warehousing.

We vote no and somehow it gets built anyway. The real cost will be to maintain it for the next 60years not the construction!! Who is profiting off of prisons? When will our votes count? Remember there is no such thing as free $. Who is going to pay the bill in the long run? Something is rotten in Denmark.
