Unemployment is going down, the Dow Jones is going up, housing prices and sales are going up, the Iraq war is over and Afghanistan is ending soon, and the Republicans want us to vote the president out of office because......the rich are not rich enough??

@627, please tell me that comment was sarcasm. Real unemployment is not going down. If people stop looking for jobs bc they can't find one, they aren't counted in the unemployment percent.

I think everyone knows that's not even close to the real number.Go to the food bank and you will see how many people are signing up for food. Go to the parking lot where people live in there cars. Houses are standing empty in neighborhoods. 6 people on my goleta block don't have jobs and even went back to school and still can't get work. Notice this year they didn't publish all the people that can't pay there property taxes in the paper .First time for that. Talk to your mail man they see what's happening. People can't even afford to shop here. Go out on th web and see the numbers. Watch the Movie They come to America. That pretty much says it all.

Even conservative economists....heck, even Mitt Romney...have admitted that the economy has improved under Obama. They just claim that it would be "more better" under the GOP.

I'm not much of a math wiz, but what's the margin of error? (The article doesn't say.) For all we know, this change lies within that, meaning that there really is no measurable change from the previous month. Can't tell from this.

If one is looking for a job or new career this article spells it out for ya! Get into information technology or medical fields and out of construction. The percentage points are meaningless of course. But the trend is there to see nationally and locally. In this day and age the loyalty of companies towards workers is non-existent. That means you are off the hook for loyalty to the companies so don't hesitate to change jobs or careers, whatever it takes to take care of your own. No job? Start a business! The window washing guy we use started out with a bucket and a squeegee and nothing else. Now he's running several crews and operating out of three counties!

@718 If Herbert Hoover had made the right moves in 1929, then they may never have been a Great Depression. The fact is that Hoover enacted all of the policies Mitt Romney is recommending--he slashed government spending to the bone and refused to lift a finger to aid starving Americans. Hoover's idea was that business could fix the problem, if freed of "big government" intervention. It didn't work. Hoover turned a bad recession into the Great Depression. We might very well have pursued the same course in 2008, and instead of 8% unemployment, we'd be talking about 25% unemployment.

718, your numbers are wrong. 8.9% in August 2011, a bit over 9.2% in August 2010... There's a downward trend of more than .3% in 4 years. Or was your post intended to be negative and fallacious? :)

SB County has lost 2,400 jobs since May of this year (source is California EDD). The economy is starting to turn negative again. The actual unemployment rate when discouraged workers are factored in is at least 12% in Santa Barbara County and 16% statewide.

Amusing when you politicos try your hand at mathematics (either side)...even funnier when you try logic. The economy is extremely bad. Unemployment is way up. Avg. income is way down. Trade imbalance is at highest level in history. Debt levels both locally and nationally are historic and epic in proportion. The funny thing about math is that in the end, all your political spin won't make a damn bit of difference. What's the old saying "Figures don't lie, but liars sure can figure!" To either political party, take whatever solace you desire from that. To democrats, your time is almost up, you are almost completely out of other people's money to spend. I am not talking about the upcoming election.

Folks, Its important to understand how the Govt gathers and concludes the unemployment numbers. They are based on a sampling of data. Meaning they poll 1-3% of the unemployed and extrapolate to a larger figure. It is a sampling, and while scientific it is by no means an accurate figure. Yes, the private sector is improving. Most of the decline has been with public sector jobs and or seasonal employment. Many seasonal workers (especially lower wage) take unemployment as a paid furlough. BIG PROBLEM The righties blame Obama (something I will never understand is why the righties scream to get Govt out of the private sector but then blame Obama for not creating more jobs). and the Left ignore the realities of our economy and keeps doing what they do - the world is getting better. But carpenters will never make 200k a year again…sorry folks. And illegal immigration has completely destroyed the service labor market… but I digress…

@737- Check your Hoover facts.. this is how Roosevelt won the election: Franklin D. Roosevelt blasted the Republican incumbent for spending and taxing too much, increasing national debt, raising tariffs and blocking trade, as well as placing millions on the government dole. Roosevelt attacked Hoover for "reckless and extravagant" spending, of thinking "that we ought to center control of everything in Washington as rapidly as possible." Roosevelt's running mate, John Nance Garner, accused the Republican of "leading the country down the path of social hmmmm... sound familiar?

If you believe that the unemployment rate has "improved" you are nuts. Many have simply dropped out of the workforce. And many are severely "underemployed." And those with jobs are in total fear that they will lose theirs next. I personally think that the unemployment statistics maintained by this government are a joke and way understate the true level of suffering out there.
