My flowers and veggies are loving this heat, so long as I keep the mulch in place and water coming. Am sending photo of my old thermometer, which is on the wall in my kitchen.

House used to stay a lot cooler when we had five layers of roof . . .

@631: "Indian summer" is a period following the first frost of autumn. Since SB virtually never has frost in autumn, we have never had, nor probably ever will have, an Indian summer.

This "Indian summer" misnomer drives me nuts, as everyone misuses the term, and to his credit, KEYT weather dude Alan Ross hasn't so far, leading me to believe he actually understands what it means.

Although the last three decades have been the hottest on record, the Arctic Sea ice reached an all-time low in September, 98% of climate scientists accept the reality of AGW and 100% accept GW, I've heard that it's just a hoax.

I grew up in LA in the 80's and it was routinely 100+ a lot of summer days. Why is it that 85 here in SB feels like 105 and 85 down there isn't bad at all?

97 on Hwy 1 at San Julian at 5:30 this afternoon. 85 by the time I got into Lompoc. Yesterday it was 96 at San Julian and 76 in Lompoc. Amazing to see the temp. rise and drop from Gaviota to Lompoc.

@691. This is our version of "Indian Summer," and we're sticking to it. We have called it "Indian Summer" always, and I have been here since early 50s.
@736 Yes. Friends, family and I never rely on what temp is reported. We go by "feel." This morning, I knew as soon as I walked out into my front yard that it was going to be in the 90s. Hours later, when I heard "91" on the local news I scoffed. Sure enough, a reliable resource (friend) called and told me, at noon, "It's 95!" (Supposed to be hotter tomorrow.)

I think they take the temp out at the Airport. Or that used to be the case. Generally, it is cooler in Goleta than in SB. It always feels cooler to me, when I am out in Goleta and come back home to a warmer downtown SB, day or night.

@763: You can call it Indian summer if you like, but it's still wrong. What we have in SoCal is traditionally warm autumns.

It seems to me that those car thermometers are inaccurately high in the warm weather. The temperature given is always much higher than the reported temperature for the area. How does a thermometer mounted somewhere on a car that's been sitting in or driving in the sun reliably measure outside temperature? It seems to me the device would have to be affected by a hot engine or hot car.

It's days like this that makes the expense of having and maintaining a pool sooooo worthwhile. And drying off only takes but a few minutes. Water temp is a frosty 72° - yummm!

I've (almost) gotten over yelling about the "Santa Barbara temperature." Yes, most media (tv & written) use the report from the airport weather station. Stupid. grumble grumble.

Scroll down on this site to see various weather station reports and their location:

Cooled off for me about 9:15 last night. I hate it. I'm a spoiled S.B.'er and it's too darn hot.

According to our indoor/outdoor thermometer at the office, it's 83 degrees in the shade on Upper State. So, warm, but not particularly hot.

@BlueB, car thermometers are notoriously innacurate. The majority are mounted on the underside of the car so that direct sunlight cannot manipulate the results. However, heat rising from the road surface can and will alter the air temperature just above the road (where the thermometer is). On a warm day, asphalt concrete can be thirty degrees warmer than the ambient temperature.
