They were very quiet coming in and it sounded to me like some of the engines went into reverse before they touched down. Used only 2500' of runway and taxied slowly to Charlie turn off. They did a combat type approach...very high and sinking fast until 50' above runway. Fun to watch!!

SHOREBIRD: according the the wiki, the C-17 can land on 3,000ft runways.

For it's size it's actually quite a graceful bird.

I saw it fly over Hendy's yesterday and it looked to be flying very low. Watched it approach SBA, such a big plane and I agree it was amazing quite for an aircraft it's size.

Hubby Bob and I were standing on the observation deck at Goleta Slough and watched it come in high the first time, do a very steep 360 degree turn and then come back in for a landing. Impressive! I told him "I'm sure someone on edhat will post why it is here." Wasn't disappointed, Max...:)

saw it pass by mesa lane heading west on it's approach to the airport. it was surprisingly quiet, made less noise than the EMB120's that go by on the same flight path.

326534P - The words "comfy" and "military" are never in the same sentence.

I flew in the C-17's predecessor, the C-141, on a 14 hour non-stop flight from Cairo, Egypt to McGuire AFB in New Jersey. Since there was a lot of cargo there were NO seats, just rocker panels along the sides of the aircraft. That was the longest flight of my life.

the insides are pretty bare bones. not a comfy flight. BB's in a boxcar?

Our runway is longer than I thought it was. That thing is so big bet it shook mobile homes in the flight pattern like an earthquake when it landed.

What a gorgeous airplane.

I'd buy one and convert it to a flying house with jacuzzi, climbing rock wall, and high tech kitchen, but its a little out of my price range, let alone the maintenance.
