Remember how once upon a time in the 1980's the homeless used to periodically get scooped up by a bus and taken to a commune up in Eastern Oregon owned by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh? They were promised a happy rural life, but when they got there they were aghast to find it was subsistence farming, and eventually most drifted back here. Locally the SunBurst Farms did the same thing, with lots of drug burnouts turning into goatherds or farmers, and their stores around town gave big discounts to help the elderly eat fresh local produce. For SOME people an agrarian existence could be a better alternative to begging on the streets.

I have a friend who lives in northeast US and she has a brother who is homeless in Santa Barbara. She said he visits during the holidays because Santa Barbara pays for his ticket out of town. Anyone else hear about this? Maybe it was a program that's since stopped? It sounded like he'd make his way back here after the holidays and that he'd done it a few times.

Maybe part of the solution is for us to pay for the trip back to where the crime was committed. In the long run, that may be cheaper than allowing them to stay here.

Roger, you wrote: I love reading about the Depression and how people survived. You might enjoy reading The Orchard, A Memoir. It's a little known story of how things were. I give the Amazon link for the descriptions, but there are copies of the book in the library.

Drugs+alcohol+gangs+domestic violence = real crime in Santa Barbara. Over and over and over and over again. Hugs are not working. So ........maybe we should convene another task force. Maybe we should integrate existing services. Or .....maybe we should send the message: do the crime and buddy, you do the time.

So, crime does pay now? Is that what these deadbeat states are saying to its citizens, commit a crime, and if you do leave the state and we won't follow you? WOW!!

A lot of people are critical the police can't do more to keep this scourge of lawless drifters out of our city. Time long past to ignore those who defend this lawless itinerant group (prior city councils) because there is no merit to the rest of us to enable and support their presence in our town. Police, do your thing. That is why we hire you and pay your salaries. To protect us and not make it easy for those who come to harm us get away with this.

Roger, you write so well. Thank you for stating the obvious - so many scanner calls involve this element. Once you attract enough of this criminal element, it becomes a safe haven and mecca for the rest of them.
