WOW! Thanks for the lesson and the visuals! I have learned so much since I subscribed to Edhat. I have no photographic skills of my own, so I really appreciate when others share theirs. My cell phone has a more sophisticated camera than my old digital camera, but even if I tried to figure it out my subject would be long gone!

Fantastic photos. I thought Matilija poppies only bloomed May to July. This one must not know that :-).

Nice photos! Especially the last one! But I think your bumblebee is actually a carpenter bee. See the purplish metallic colors (most visible in the second photo)?.... bumblebees aren't shiny like that, nor are they colored like that. Wing shape gives it away too. As for the proverbial chocolate fountain... looks to be a Matilija poppy (Romneya coulteri). Nice photos!

...as I drove away from my curbside parking spot yesterday, I noticed a honeybee on the hood of my car, fully loaded with pantaloon saddlebags of pollen. It struggled to remain upright as I slowly eased back to the curb. A whiff of breeze tossed it forward to the air intake at the base of my windshield, as it struggled mightily against the weight of the pollen load. It finally made it, crawling out and flying off erratically with the cache of pollen. phew! it was fun to watch.

Thanks for the carpenter bee info, 215. Fun story, Seedlady. Thanks for the nice comments, all. Finally, thanks Edhat for providing a venue where knucklehead amateur photographers like me can share the magic of our community.
