I looove curry leaves! I had no idea you coul successfully grow the tree in SB, thank you so much for posting this!!!!!!!! To those who want fresh curry leaves an don't have a place to grow a tree, The very wonderful proprietors of my very favorite Pennywise Market has them for sale, and you can successfully freeze the fresh leaves to keep them flavorful for occasional use. Sooooooo good! I especially love it with very few other flavors, because the subtle tastiness is sooooo wonderful.

@773 - I think you meant to call out "516" & "596", not my post (644) that correctly identified the uses of curry leaves in Indian cooking. My sources for that information come from Maya Kaimal's award-winning Indian cookbook "Curried Favors" and local treasure Aparna Khanolkar's "Happy Belly Happy Soul, a guide to Vedic cooking".

325516, 325644 you have obviously had very narrow exposure to Indian (and other South Asian) cuisines. We bought our tree in a coffee can pot from an Indian grocery in Artesia for ten dollars, and it has not been thriving, but it does do well enough to provide the flavours we are used to most of the time. It took five years to get to 3 feet tall, and has done better since being transplanted to a spot that gets more direct sun instead of filtered sun half the day. I would love to know the OP's secrets to success.

Where did you get the tree? I tried several seedlings from mail order catalogs and none survived.

Curry leaves are used to flavor traditional Indian food and are not at all related to "curry" which is made of ground spices. Curry leaves are used whole and add an important perfumey scent and light flavor. Bay leaves can be substituted but aren't nearly as good. Curry leaves are added to rice, stews, etc.

I've never seen a curry recipe that calls for curry leaves. Most are just a combination of common spices. What are these leaves used for?

Pretty sure the curry we're all familiar with here doesn't include these leaves.

Could you market the leaves to interested buyers?

Such fun to learn about new and different trees/plants. That tree will get 15-20' tall. That's a lot of flavoring. Thanks for the pretty pics.
