The "Marco Polo" restaurant was there in the 1950s. I remember (at age six?) being excited whenever we go to "go out," and eat the lobster soup.

Almost a perfect reconstruction but for the optics and the lighting (time of day). Good effort. It reminds me of a photographer's work I saw recently where his present day shots are so perfectly matched to the historical photos he is able to blend the past and present together in one image seamlessly. Great fun.

I went there on my 21st Bday with my Dad. He loved the piano bar. Can't remember the piano players name, but he played all over town.

Sure looks like those skinny old gas pumps. There's even an attendant standing there. They enlarged the windows, added that wraparound bit to the front below the tower. Otherwise it looks unchanged.

Thanks for the pictures! I don't know if those are gas pumps; however, in the 1950s there was a gas station just east of the Inn, we filled our bike tires w/air there. When the highway was changed to a freeway, mid-50s, it was removed. The main part of the station was taken to Stearns Wharf and became Moby Dicks resturant.

When it was the Marco Polo they had a trio that included long time clothing salesman (Silverwoods,Gammils etc.), my stepdad, who worked nights as a drummer there. When it became the Olive Mill Bistro they had Gil Rosas at the Piano Bar. He came there from the old Harbor restaurant which had a beautiful Piano Bar, that unfortunately burned down when the whole place went up in flames one night. ( it had a marvelous nautical theme and looked nothing like the new Harbor) Then Gil went to the Summerset which also had a piano bar. My mother Patricia Munda (known by all as Patty) was a cocktail witress at the Summersette and then moved to the Olive Mill Bistro when Gil did. She served drinks in the lounge there for years. The Summerset, just down Coast Village Road from there, was owned by the same brothers that ran the El Paseo Restaurant.

Dear EDhatters, just a few corrections.
I never played at the Harbor restaurant. Through the years people have placed me at the San Ysidro Ranch (Tomaz Glinski), The Reindeer Room (Rickie Esteban) and the Miramar.
I did play at the Santa Barbara Biltmore and the Coral Casino for special events.
Most of my years in Montecito were at the Somerset Restaurant, the Olive Mill Bistro (a co-owner), and later at the Cafe Del Sol. I am honored that people still remember those wonderful days.
Incidentally, the Marco Polo Restaurant opened about 1963 or 1964. My memory is not what it used to be but I started at the Somerset in Sept. of 1961 and the Marco Polo opened 2 or 3 years later. The owner of the Marco Polo (Jim Porter, not to be confused with Ken Porter, who later opened the Porterhouse next to the present Cafe Del Sol) tried to woo me away from the Somerset but I was very happy where I was.
