Is Sarah Miller-McCune -- who once said she hoped to buy the paper -- preparing to challenge the News-Press? The Santa Barbara Journalism Initiative just received a $500,000 grant. Major players include Steve Ainsley, a former -- and very popular -- publisher of the paper when it was owned by the New York Times, and Melinda Burns, a reporter fired for union activities. Both work for Miller-McCune. A press release describes the Initiative as a "nonprofit enterprise journalism project for investigative and explanatory reporting on the South Coast." More info online if you Google.

Sarah can't buy a paper that is not for sale. Nor did she ever invest in an alternative one. Sarah is blowing smoke. Ainsley is a light weight. Progressivism in Santa Barbara is discredited. Let Sarah burn her money up if she wants, but never forget she funded the vagrant news network that brought hundreds of vagrant RVs to this town looking for their promised free parking on city lots. Sarah Miller McCune is bad news.

We definitely need more good reporters covering the Central Coast. Thank you, Sarah, for helping make this happen.

I can't understand why McCaw doesn't just fold the paper, and sell off its assets?

@713: She won't sell because.: a) She's got all the $$$ in the world, so why should she? b) By doing so she would be admitting that she was wrong to buy the NP as a hobby in the first place. c) She's vindictive and is apparently trying to prove some kind of point to the proletariat. ("This is MY toy and no one else can play with it!") d) She has no idea how truly disliked and unrespected she is in the community. I think this is some variant of the Marie Antoinette syndrome. e) She's proven to herself by her constant refusal to pay awards in the lawsuits she's lost that she is above the law. f) If she sold the NP it would mean that she would no longer have her own privately owned sounding board for animal rights. I'm sure I'm missing a few points, but you get the idea. Other than the above, I can think of no reason she wouldn't sell the paper to someone who has a genuine interest in our community.

The odd little magazine Miller McCune proved McCune knows nothing about publishing anything - collection of poorly written, unfocused articles thrown together in a highly biased meaningless vanity project. McCune and her duct tape cronies need to stop beating a dead horse. The only point 730P is missing is she/he has obviously not been reading the NewsPress and fails to realize what a welcome part of many people's lives the NewsPress finally became under McCaw's skillful and intuitive hand - and much of that credit must also go to Scott Steepleton for measuring the unmet media needs in this community and intelligently meeting them.

@739.... wow, have you read any of Steepleton's work? Or are you Steepleton himself? That guy is terrible. His articles read like an Op-Ed piece disguised as an unbiased article written by someone who purports to be a serious journalist..... Kind of like Peter Lance

Peter Lance wrote what, two series? And they both hit a home run. The NewsPress comes out daily and is an superb source for local news, arts and entertainment, culture as well as a very broad exposure to national columnist across the entire political spectrum both irritating and enlightening. The NewsPress is an excellent and credible daily paper with some fine young writers who keenly observe local events and institutions. The animal rights editorials have been long gone, so it shows someone doing all the complaining has not read the new NewsPress in a very long time. Take the duct tape off your eyes, as well as your mouth and take a new look at this new NewsPress and see if the range of columnists can bring you into the 21st century.

Hmmm, sounds like we are sounding off on the value and quality of today's News Press rather than the obvious Labor Relations violations. The New York Times version of the SBNP was a journalist's paper -- well written, good community reporting, professional editing and photography, beat reporters, good to great local columnists, a responsive and insightful editorial page. Firing a chunk of the staff didn't improve the paper. It is now very limited in local reporting, has insipid editorials written by politically motivated local paid consultants or wealthy anti-union activists, huge type to mask the lack of articles, and national columnists which generally following the tea party agenda (not all, but most). Still read the paper but it is a sad shadow of its' former self. Thanks to EdHat we have a local community journalism outlet with great stories and pictures from talented journalists such as the Urban Hikers, and up to the minute news from Roger. Maybe someday EdHat will morph into the local "newspaper." Hope so. Hope also that the News Press former staffers win in court.

If labor does not win in NLRB hearings, the union stacked deck must have been asleep at the switch. NLRB is a sandbox full of cat droppings. First Amendment rights are at stake and McCaw has the resources to take it all the way to the top.
