Get the sticky mouse traps. they eat the seeds and stick to it, you toss it out in the garbage. They are disturbing Roger but no poison is involved and they work better than the hard traps.

Roger, just wanted to let those in Lompoc know that my granddaughters were sent home from school with flyers about the attempted kidnapping. It happened about a block from La Canada Elementary in Lompoc. Keep your kids close everyone.

Roger, I've read that mice don't like mint. Try buying a couple of mint plants. You can also make a mint spray. See http://www.ehow.com/how_2340830_use-mint-repel-mice.html

Good luck!

I wish I could loan you my electronic trap.. It's as humane as it gets.. You turn it on, leave some peanut butter in it, and when they enter, they touch two plates, they get stiff and fall over in a minute. Then you grab the trap, dump it in trash and reset it and put it back down. No trapped fingers or false alarms like a set trap. I had a Smart rat, then I got this from Ace hardware, and it got numerous on the 6 C batteries. It cost $40 but will last and last. My yard has been clear for a while! Those other glue traps are pretty inhumane as they die slowly.. And will even chew off their own leg to get out.. Spring loaded is cheap but finicky and can hurt pets or kids or splatter blood and yuckiness. Electronic zapper is the way to go..

Had a rodent get into my garage earlier this year... ended up destroying (gnawing on) a bunch of stuff, and peeing/pooping on everything else. Ended up being hundreds of dollars worth of damage... I had always had a "live and let live" policy prior to this, but no more!

Roger, you know the news feeds lately include Hanta Virus from mice in Yosemite, and the guy in Oregon who pulled a mouse out of his cat's mouth and contracted Bubonic Plague. Cat died anyway, the man lost his hands and some toes to the spreading infection. NOT WORTH being nice to the mouse... who will bring in family once the homefront is established.

Been through it myself.... put down the awful snapping traps, they will work and your guilt will die down eventually. It is simply NOT a good idea to "live & let live" with rodents.

Roger has a cat... The snapping traps might pose a challenge.. Electronic .. The last trap you will ever need.. Unless you want to build a trap off google. But most homemade traps kill slowly or drown the guy. Nobody wants to hear torture sounds.. Electronic equals, no mess, instant kill, no suffering or no outsmarting the trap.

320 has it right. If you live anywhere close by, where I can walk to you/take bus, I will loan you my RatZapper. Electrocution is most humane method.
PLEASE don't use such cruel methods as glue traps, people! And the snap traps can be a horror show if they don't "quite get" the rodent. I know. It happened in my kitchen, blood everywhere and I still had to kill the poor little woodrat with a shovel!

RatZapper. A good investment, easy to use. Batteries last forever. No "incidental" kill, no suffering. Rodent can be buried in back yard. RIP.

If anyone is concerned with Hanta Virus remember if you see mouse poo don't sweep it up immediately. Spray it with bleach and let it sit a while and sweep it up while still wet. Hanta Virus is an airborne disease. Don't let it get swept into the air.

We had a problem with mice and plugged the whole they were coming in. I know you've mentioned you're not sure where they are coming in from. Then we bought these devices you plug in and they are supposed to send out some current or noise that the mice don't like, and keeps them away. My husband took care of it so I apologize for not having all the information. Maybe something to look into if you're really against killing the mice.

Roger, thank you for your kind heart. I hate to kill anything, and whatever I can, I relocate animals/insects/ spiders into the great outdoors. You really must not have ANY kind of food/crumbs around, if you want to keep mice and rats away. Plugging up entry holes is good, but I had a problem with woodrats sneaking in through open doors during balmy evenings.
One night I heard a strange sound. it was pure luck that I was staying up very late. A woodrat had got "trapped" in my dining room, and was trying to chew a hole through my 100-year-old house's sliding pocket door! The damage would have been sickening and costly.
I zapped him/her the next night, in my living room. Poor thing, but I used him as fertilizer for my tomatoes.

One other thing, Roger -- as someone mentioned, you need to eliminate any crumbs, etc. Find some sturdy plastic containers to keep food in that the mice can't chew through. If there's no food, they won't be so attracted to your house.

We had to get a professional to come in and they patched up even the teeniest holes with wire mesh and then used several Rat Zappers. They really do work great and are humane way to take care of the problem without having to see or touch them. A little red light flashes when there is something in the trap, be it rat or mouse.

Gross..
And I wouldn't trust some anonymous poster saying its safe.. Rats get into houses, or baby rats.. Rats definitely can spread Hanta through fecal matter (usually airborne dust from the poo.) And some mice do carry Hanta as well as other diseases. Once they leave enough scent trail(from waste) then even after that mouse is gone, others will follow the scent to feel comfortable in that space. I'm not lecturing, I speak from experience:(
