011 and Erin's quote pretty much hit the nail on the head. 130 has it down too.

Actual fog is a cool phenomena, but the fog-less grey overcast that goes on and on and on. And on, continuing to go on....until the sun comes out, which is usually sometime between 'already gone insane' and never. That's one of the prices of paradise! But it's a bummer in the summer. Solutions include driving to Ojai, or Santa Ynez, sometimes just up the hill if it's low actual fog. The main solution used by most locals is adapt and get used to it.

The fog is waiting to move over the airport when I want to take a flight in or out. It plans on being thick enough to bawl up my flight plans...

40 yrs. ago when I arrived as a student at UCSB...and subsequently spent my first summer in Isla Vista, it took a few months before we realized that if we went a mile inland we could find sun! (we did not have a car, only our beater bikes!)

Somebody--I want to credit Erin Graffey--said that Santa Barbara actually does have four seasons: Fog, Fire, Flood and Fiesta.

Santa Barbara "seasons": early summer, summer, late summer, and next summer. In between we have June Gloom and Rainy Season.

This has been an unusually clear summer. Usually, it will be clear for a few days, the interior valley heats up and its air rises, which then sucks the fog/marine layer in on the coast.

It was an odd fog, no wind, warm air and a really thick marine layer hugging the coast. Usually we dont see that this late in the summer but it can come any day, any season
