We have a full time pack of coyotes up here on North Ontare. I estimate there are at least 20 of them. They took a cat 15 feet from my house in broad daylight. I am seeing them in the daytime at least 3 to 5 times a week. My dog has attacked them several times, i had to pull him off a grown coyote right in my yard, the coyote went into full submission. Bobcat population also doing quite well up here. I think the post wild fire rodent population explosion is also supporting their high numbers. Also don't discount Owls. I had a friend who had to cut down a large old tree, found a raptor nest with about 10 kitty collars all wrapped into the structure of the nest. We decided not to bother calling the owners.

On whether coyote tastes good, my cats won't eat coyote but my 90 pound dog is eager to try. We used to live on the edge of the wilderness near Rattlesnake Canyon surrounded by coyotes. The big dog negotiated a territorial boundary with the coyotes 200 feet from the house and was protective of our cats, but the dog was kept in at night and the cats sometimes went out at night. We lost two cats in our first year there. Then we got a cat who somehow had learned about coyote strategy and the real threat that most cats don't understand. This savvy cat never got caught, but once she spent two days up a palm tree until a neighbor rescued her. A wary, knowledgeable cat can keep out of harm's way. I wish there were a way to teach our felines this skill.

You can eat all the coyotes you want as far as I'm concerned Roger. I'm not sure if the authorities frown upon it, or how they taste.

I also live in the upper east side and have noticed the same thing. I assumed that it was the time of year for the coyotes to be venturing closer to the residential areas. I have two cats, one that is always indoors, and the other that we adopted after someone abandoned her in the neighborhood. Unfortunately she is somewhat feral and likes to be outdoors most of the time.

It's fair to eat a coyote if you want but carnivores don't tend to eat each other. If an animal has forward facing eyes it is a predator. We don't eat hawks, eagles, cats, dogs, owls. Those sideways facing eyes mark a prey animal, cow, chicken, duck etc. I think they just taste better to a predator like humans.

068-Neutered cats do not spray unless they are sick or do not have access to a litter box. Scratching is easily controlled by nail clipping and covering with soft paws. 059-You are going to need a lot of air soft pellets and quite a bit of luck to deter the current coyote population.

Is now the time to mention how many birds and lizards that cats kill each year? And not for food, but for sport because they're bored? I can live with that, but it seems unfair to want to kill coyotes when they killing for food and survival. Like the commentor said, if you don't want them to be part of the food chain, keep them inside, and accept the fact that they may show their displeasure by spraying on your couch or clawing up your favorite chair. After all, they're cats!

There should be periodic counter-measures against the coyotes to keep them wary and afraid to come into the city. I know many of you will claim they were here first, but I don't believe the Chumash tolerated them in the past and they have increased their population in human habitat in recent decades because we provide a lot of free food--our pets and pet food. It would not take much--they are smart and will quickly take the hint. The real question is which agency should act--county or city?

I have two cats so I do sympathize with those who have lost their pets, but truth be told you did let them outside to fend for themselves. You wouldn't do that with your dog, although I guess some people do that as well. When a cat is left outside day or night it becomes part of the food chain that is very much alive in our community. Don't blame the coyotes, they are just doing what comes natural. Cats can live quite happily inside where it is less likely they will end up on a lost poster.

People love their pets. I, too, have noticed an increase in 'lost cat' notices in my neighborhood. I can truthfully say that I have never found a lost cat. My beef is that people who post signs very rarely remove them. It makes me wonder if the pet was ever located. So there's sadness on two levels. . . A lost pet and a neighborhood blight.

My friend and I walking on the Riviera in the morning were almost run over by a very large coyote. It seemed to have no fear at all of humans, we were surprised to see it out in the neighborhood that time of the day. Another friend of mine was housesitting close to the Museum of Natural History and while sitting on the deck with the cat a coyote ran up and tried to grab the cat. They are hungry and losing fear of man and they are in our neighborhoods in broad daylight. I would guess that may be the reason for the "lost kitties". So sad to think about. Maybe best to keep them inside day and night.

I hate to say it but I would have to agree it probably coyotes a friend of mine who lives in sycamore canyon lost their shitzu to coyotes and by my house in Winchester cats go missing all the time

It's coyotes and I too have noticed a big increase of missing cats from the same general area. I am hyper aware because we have a cat and I already had one meet that fate. Nothing I will ever forget.

As sad as it is, they probably were eaten by coyotes. They used to kill at least one cat a month by my parents house just up the way from there on the riviera.

996 - racoons are clever but I don't think they know how to make "lost cat" signs. As for the 964 & 968s comments, I was thinking the same thing...and I'm a pet lover. Sometimes you just have to laugh at the morose.

I live in the area also, and almost posted about this last week. It has us a bit freaked out because we have an outdoor kitty that we love dearly, and have been thinking about keeping him in for a while. Out cat looks just like Pooper, and everytime I see the missing sign my heart sinks :( I woke up in the middle of the night a few days ago to a large racoon on out porch the other night, but I don't think they could be the culprit.

Someone found a black and white kitten at the Milpas bus stop in front of Trader Joes..I heard the other day there was pack of stray dogs at Alisos and Cacique wondered if they were coyote?

Sometimes you just become more aware of things, while there are not really more of those things - similar to when you're thinking about buying a particular car and then see them all over. Probably not your answer, but I'd like to think so.
