Mrs. Perkin's son owned the Alisal Ranch. The Gillespie estate was open, when Gillespie owned it, to all neighbors, rich or poor, to stroll through the gardens. Wonderful old photos, thanks.

The Gillespie estate is on Parra Grande. One of it's claims to fame was it's use as Al Pacino's home in the movie Scar Face. It is currently owned by a Russian tycoon....first name Sergei but I cannot remember his last name.

Thank you for the interesting photos. I wonder how the poster come by them. Edith Forbes Perkins 1843-1925 is noted in Santa Barbara history as having been killed by the collapse of the Arlington Hotel in the 1925 earthquake. She was the widow of railway tycoon Charles Ellliot Perkins 1840-1907.

The first one reminds me of Casa del Herrero. Very fun to tour is you ever have the chance.

The Laurel and Hardy reference was a good one :-)

Lovely photos. Those stairs remind me how people used to think nothing of walking. Can't imagine any estate now installing a set of steps like that. (Also reminds me of that Laurel & Hardy piano episode.)
