Jeremy Davies, who won for best guest actor on a series (Justified) and presented an award last night went to HS for some years in Carpinteria, too.

631, yes it does. Their taxes pay for your social services.

I'm always amused by the grandiose sense of self-importance exhibited by the entertainment crowd when speaking at these "award" events. I'm embarassed for them. Probably just nervous guilt presenting itself when they realize how trivial their pursuits at highly-paid "playing" really are compared to the truly important aspects of life. Oh, well - just sour grapes on my part. I, too, would take the money and run were I in their shoes.

632, I stand corrected. Thanks to the extremely wealthy and your property tax payments. All our social services are just stellar compared to other towns.

631, that's kind of ridiculous. Everyone who has a home here is a local. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss's husband was born and raised here, doesn't get much more local than that!

649-There is no need to be embarassed for either of these members of our community. There is a thing called art which many of us appreciate in one form or another. The craft is not easy and certainly not everyone could or should do it. These two happen to do it well and should be proud of their accomplishments. The outlet this type of art represents is widely popular and appreciated so I would not exactly call their pursuits trivial. Each to his own however you are certainly not obligated to watch movies or television.

If they appear at local fundraisers for legitimate causes and give back to the community that they call "home" then they are an asset and we should be thankful they do live here and proud of their accomplishments. If not then who cares how famous they are or what awards they were given and that they own real estate here.

MSSB - I enjoy movies, television, theater and many other art forms. My point above is that so often the practitioners (primarily in film and television) seemingly portray their craft as something akin to brain surgery. One can't help but laugh out loud when listening to the same old speeches that describe the "risks we take" or the "sacrifice we made to get this production made" blah, blah, blah...ad infinitum. By example, a single mother struggling through this recession afer being laid off really makes a sacrifice. Explains why therapy thrives as such a huge cottage industry in the Hollywood environs. Again, sour grapes on my part seasoned with the envy of easy riches.

Some people luck out. There are lots of actors who work tremendously hard and are fabulous but not rich or famous. Respect them--or don't--for what they do with their riches--or don't, not just because they have them. This is Santa Barbara, playground of the wealthy since the post-civil war era, 100 miles from Hollywood: of course we have motion picture celebs here. Some of them participate in the community and others stay behind their gates. Ran into Kathy Ireland at Our Daily Bread once. Very pregnant Drew Barrymore was in my shop downtown last summer, and Fiona Hughes (soap actress), too; Michael Douglas used to be a member of my gym; I ran into John Cleese buying coffee (not tea?) at Vices and Spices a couple of years ago. Even more years ago Kevin Costner made headlines for helping remove a tree that had fallen across Padaro lane in a bad storm. Fun town.

@649-your post and it's intentions were not lost on me. I understand and agree with your -oh, so unpopular- feeling. I am amazed that the public watches these award shows or even 1/2 of these shows that these actors are receiving awards for. Human produced art is a luxury. Until society changes a bit and my neighbors all have some means of food and medical care, natures art: ocean waves, towering trees, floating clouds, butterflies, birds, a dog frolicking, a child's squeal will do for me.

Acting is a job; well paid work, for the most part, but still a job. Why all the gripping about these people? As far as Julia goes, yes, she married Brad Hall who grew up in Montecito at All Saints Church where his father was pastor. His mother grew up about a block away. Brad and Julia bought a beach cottage previously owned by a former County Supervisor, he and his wife knew Brad and his parents well. You complainers about being "local", when did you move here? I grew up in Montecito, 3 generations of my family were domestic help on the estates; some people have more money than others. So what?

Never begrudge another's riches and be kind always - life is much sweeter when you do that.
